Could Climate Change be the end of many festivals?

combining a festival with visiting a different country is great. I went to sziget the other year. It's a really good festival, cheap, was a decent and very varied line up, burning hot, had a wet tshirt competition every night at 11pm, beautiful city, parks full of massive statues of communist leaders, really nice vibe,,,

how can a UK festival hope to compete with this I mused supped my pint of wine that had cost about £2 whilst watching a nubile young european have water lashed all over her succelent orbs

They are, but public transport within the UK is also far too expensive.

Is it? That's not made the case just because it's cheaper elsewhere.

It's one of the fuck-ups of modern society that people travel unnecessarily, while expecting that travel to be cheap. Around london there's plenty of people who travel 30+ miles every day to work, and could be waving every day at someone doing the exact opposite journey to them, where they both earn a couple of thou more than they would if they worked in their hometowns - and that couple of thou doesn't get close to covering their travel costs.

The idea of working where you live will come back into fashion sooner or later (if only as a financial necessity). You might as well get your head around that idea now.

yea, well obviously if you live in Scotland, then going to Glastonbury isn't going to be much difference, travel wise, than going to Belgium (for example). But then it'd cost a lot less for them to go to TITP than getting to anywhere in Europe... no?

Its not as simple as that though is it? What about people live in rural areas, or myself who live in a small town where there is no work.

yeah, it's pretty simple. The choice will be: do you want a job, or not.

It used to be the case that centres of population came and went over time. It's something that modern society pretends it can change, but it ultimately won't be able to.

If I remember correctly a few years ago efestivals had a year where they didnt advertise or promote international festivals, due to the carbon footprint. what happened to that? Or am I dreaming that happened at all.

It wasn't as you remember it.

I am looking at going to Werchter next year. They include a rail ticket from any Belgian rail station. Getting a Eurostar package from Manchester to Brussels is 135 for myself and my daughter. From leaving my door I will be in Brussels in a little over 5 hours. A standard return for the 2 of us to Castle Cary is 180 and the journey takes over 5 hours (and then some with the chaos at the train stations) Even booking the really cheap advance tickets if we can get them will cost around 100 to 160.

I started by asking the question, if climate change causes this much disruption to the weather, will as many festivals be able to carry on? If the weather becomes what some predict (more extremes with lots of rain), how will going to Belgium help? Climate change won't be restricted to the uk.

the weather was the reason for bringing it up.

what have I said to give the impression that I'm against the idea of going to festivals abroad?

if uk festivals offer free travel, free food, tickets are free, etc etc, if we have summers like this then would they still happen?

on this occasion though European festivals probably would be a better bet. The bad weather is down to the jet stream running south of the Uk rather than north, I've friends working in Switzerland and they say they are having a fantastic summer.

Its not a case of the whole of Europe becoming wetter. While the jet stream's running then most of continental europe will see a warming up and a drying out, we get the brunt of the rain.

Continental europe will very likely have significantly dryer weather than us over the next few decades
