I'm now holding out for something like this, though I'm fairly sure Geoff Ellis isn't basing his line up upon the hopes of a single 18 year old.

FRIDAY

main stage

Green Day

The Black Keys

nme

Jack White

tuts

Bloc Party

SATURDAY

main stage

Biffy Clyro

Dizzee Rascal

Franz Ferdinand

nme

The Prodigy or Chemical Brothers or Fatboy Slim. Dancier act of this calibre.

tuts

At The Drive-In

SUNDAY

main stage

The Killers

Mumford & Sons

nme

Queens of the Stone Age

tuts

Justice

Alternatively, have Muse headline the Saturday, pop Biffy under The Killers, move Mumford to Saturday's NME headline slot and not have the dancier NME headliner.

I've never heard of the top three tracks you listed, and the others are from their debut or thereabouts.

If you were being honest, how many of their best tracks would displace any tracks on a Cure best of CD?

Honestly? All of them, like it or not, and as much as you want to deny it Arctic Monkeys are a more successful band with better songs.

Whenever I've seen the Arctic Monkeys play live they are very static and get a shit reaction from the crowd. I seem to recall they got a reaction when they headlined Reading a couple of years ago.

So did you just choose to ignore the video I posted? you know the one where the whole crowd pretty much sings the songs for them? go through 90% of the tracks on that video and you'll hear the crowd singing along.

Nirvana haven't written any new material in 20 years either, but I still see teenagers wearing their T shirts, so your argument is bollocks.

You'll often find that when someone does they find it very hard to write new material, can't see Kurt Cobain releasing a new track anytime soon.

And my argument isn't bollocks, you've just chosen a ridiculously bizarre example, congratulations.

I've seen loads of bands who were around in the 70s when I was way too young to go to gigs. The charts are dead nowadays and new music isn't selling or getting the exposure it used to, and a lot of people are listening to older music which gets more airplay.

Ah right this old chestnut, "The charts are dead" then how in the fuck did The Cure only get to 30 something in the charts?! surely if the charts are dead it should be even easier for the cure? or is it as suspected that the Cure are infact shite?

Tell that to all the big European and UK festivals they have headlined in recent years.

Which is precisely my argument, they are not a headline act anymore, their show was poor at Reading.

Like it or not, most people expect the headliners of major festivals to be loaded with popular and well-known tracks. I'm not talking about regular gig goers like us on here, but those who go to see big names at what might be their only concerts of the year.

Precisely! Ask 80% of 18 year olds to tell you who The Cure are and they would be struggling, badly.

For what it's worth T in the Park tends to be my only concert of the year, I prefer to spend my money on football through the year and then during the off-season go to T in the Park and see some artists, preferably good ones who can release a top 20 album, people would be raging if T chose some backward act who can't do that.

The biggest names to headline Glastonbury, Isle of Wight, and Hard Rock Calling have been acts going for 25+ years - Springsteen, U2, Neil Young. Black Sabbath and AC/DC have headlined Download in recent years too.

The Boss, Last Album reached- Number One.(2012)

U2, Last album reached-Number One.(2009)

Can't be arsed looking through the rest but you get the idea.

If David Bowie or Led Zeppelin reformed and offered themselves up at an affordable price to Geoff Ellis, do you think he would book them? Neither of them have had a hit single in a long time either, going by your logic.

And now you are just making things up, for starters Led Zeppelin haven't had a hit single/album for a long time because they don't produce them anymore, similar with Bowie who is retired, whereas The Cure still are trying to produce records and singles, and failing.

This is where you're wrong I'm afraid. I was at Reading for the cure and to say they were great is an overstatement - I can understand die hard Cure fans liking the set but for those that only knew a few songs (this being the majority of Reading) it was a long and boring set.

The Arctic monkeys however put on a high energy show which is a giant contrast to any Cure show I've ever seen.

I am not a harcore cure fan, well wasn;t before the show and thought it was a brilliant 2 and half hour set! (This isn't to say some didn't btw) just to say I am 23 years old and basically listened to the greatest hits album a few times before reading and I really really enjoyed all 2 and half hours. I was left stunned by the set, and its up there with my favorite sets of all time.

and LOL high energy show from the arctic monkeys?! really?! They are getting better live on a big stage, but I would hardly call them high energy and exciting live...

Don't get me wrong, the hits were great but it just seemed 2 and a half hours was too much for them at a place like Reading. You may be 16 and love them but you're the exception - not the rule I'm afraid.

Please don't make it seem like I'm having a go because I'm not - just stating my opinion (which you're welcome to disagree with) :)

This thread is teh lolz. Some of us are wet behind the ears fan boys and some are old heads who have lived through rise and fall of both the cure and the arctics. The arctics are a good band but to be honest they have 2 hits and 2 that you might hum the tune to. The Cure, who I hated during their heyday as they weren't metulz, have loads of hits that you still hear now. I watched their set and thought it was brilliant. I been to see the Monkeys twice and have been disappointed both times. The most effort I've sen them put in was at the Olympic ceremony. I'm sure a lot of the yoof of today would prefer to see the arctics headline than the cure but they're probably the same ones that think that watching someone play CDs is a great live experience or that Nikki Minje is wikid awsums.
