And people accuse me of being old and out of touch! Just turn on Scuzz and Kerrang and you'll see a plethora of new scene rock bands all copying the more successful ones. Download has been the busiest festival I've been to over the last few years. Ok it may be because the competition fell on its arse but it's far from being in recession. I'm spending an absolute fortune on gigs and really don't need any more in my calendar! Fact is, good rock bands last because they are good. When the competition is a flood of nursery rhyme songs fronted by talentless bimbos and pretty boys to fleece the very young and gullible of their pocket money then there is no wonder that people still want to see actual musicians performing decades after they first hit the scene. I used to like that T had a mix of everything but if they want to narrow their target audience to those that buy chart shite and X factor then they'll have to accept that everyone else will go elsewhere. It may well come full circle again but I suspect the current "direction" is driven more by profit margins than genre popularity no matter how much they are damaging the brand that they built up over the years.

Listened through all those announced, as I do with every act i'm not sure about, and that was by far the most depressing one ever, there was not a single act that I would definitely go and see and only a couple that I would maybe go and watch if there was absolutely nothing else on at the same time, I have my quota of bands I would watch over the weekend already, nothing a definite cannot-miss-must-see really but acts like this makes me sad where the direction of the festival is continuing to go, maybe one day they will realise and take it back to the general mix of great bands

Probably for the same reason that Radio 1 have been playing Mona Lisa by Panic at the Disco for a few years. Somebody in the staff likes them and they tick the rock box so no one can complain that they are not catered for. Once they actually look around and see the company they are in they'll probably do a Mastodon.

This.

I asked a girl in my work who is in her early 20s and goes to the cathouse weekly, what great new rock bands have emerged in the last 5 years. She could give me nothing. I asked another friend and she said biffy. Except I saw them in the Barras 6 years ago. I used to go to rock gigs all the time. But the bands I saw 10-15 years ago are still the same on the scene. Korn, rage, slipknot, rammstein, queens, coal chamber, Alice in chains, maiden ect from download I'd love to go and see, but I've see most of them countless times I am at a loss across most of the genre to find something that excites me. If anyone genuinely has a recommendation then please let me know. I am not trolling, I love rock music but without something new coming through its kind of on its arse IMO.

We are scientists playing oran mor on the 29th july. I'm hoping they will be at T too but i'm not sure if them playing glasgow a few weeks after makes it more or less likely. To be fair Oran Mor is tiny so i'm hoping they will be at T in case i dont manage to get tickets for it.
