Indeed, the time has gone by for a lot of the indie/rock stuff that sold well a few years ago and nothing to match it has come through.

There has always been cheese there but it's only more noticeable now due to the lack of decent material, and a festival has to book the fest of a bad bunch in some people's minds for it to go ahead

Its helping sales rather than hindering, people are paying rather than sneaking in free. It was quite easy to get tickets in the late 90s, I remember sending cheques to Glastonbury ticket office.

Oh you definitely missed out not being old enough, unless you think ticket sales is what's important on a good fest.

Yeah in order for Rock/Indie another band need to be really pushed that have a great output of songs, know how to perform live well and are managed well as to not overhype them. Yet i don't believe this will happen anytime soon. I would really like to see the next big band step up at somepoint within the next few years.

did it kinda of work like although they didn't pay for entry, they still bought food etc and drink over the weekend? I was under the impression it's generally always been hard to although i guess that does only come from a mid 2000's onwards background.

it's moreso the fact that ticket sales, profiting etc is what'll keep a fest going surely? paying for bands but losing money through ticket sales surely isn't good

I'd agree that no new Indie/Rock bands are really breaking to the level of older bands like Foo Fighters, etc that still sell out stadiums.

I think a lot of the blame lies with TV who only want to show Reality TV Karaoke acts, and only Jools Holland is left for everything else. I'd like to see Jools' show moved to peak time on BBC2 and made more frequently rather than per series - lets be honest there is nothing else on BBC2.

I don't think the answer is only booking older bands or only booking new ones. I think the balance has to weigh towards which acts are selling more tickets.

The past two years have been ridiculous in terms of the acts booked for T. Definitely nowhere near value for money in my opinion, which is why I'm not going this year reluctantly.

I don't think Jools Holland is the answer he does help bring lots of music to a newer audience if they really want to do it right they should take a risk with a music show, BBC2 even or any other channel, prime time like you said with a presenter that has never been heard of then the show can in no way based off the presenter have a bad start.

Say they were to start with someone like Chris Evans then it would already be off to a bad start but an unheard of presenter from something like a Youtube show that they are dedicated to weekly, know their music and have an open mind to different music would work really well.

Sadly this won't happen anytime soon but it would be a great idea in order to showcase the latest and greatest music and it's not just limited to the type of music that is consistently flowing through the charts year after year everytime the artist releases a new single (Rihanna).

Or people should get of there arses and search for new music themselfs, in this day and age there's no excuse not to find new music. You got the vast Internet to find new music, why would you want it on tv?

When the likes of myself and devilman were teenagers, there wasn't the Internet or multiple music channels to spoon feed you and tell you what to listen to. You had to get of your arses and do it yourself.

People get the lineups they deserve in the end of the day as that's what people are buying.

I personally don't think we need tv shows with new music as people won't watch it...although that' is what's sad about the record stores going from the high street as people are not out there looking for music.

. But it would be nice to see a music format that plays some of the new music on the tv which you can kind of talk about with people if they have also watched it instead of having this totally isolated way of searching for music through the internet.

I never really understand when people say there are no good rock or indie bands out there. There's heaps.

Chvrches

Palma Violets

Pulled Apart By Horses

Twin Atlantic

The Vaccines

The Xcerts

Young Guns

All rock & indie bands that stand to make it big sooner or later. Plenty more out there as well. Some others just making the step up to headliner/sub level at festivals:

Biffy Clyro

The Black Keys

Florence + The Machine

Paramore

Queens Of The Stone Age.

No doubt others I've forgotten.

I do agree that media often neglects a long term investment in solid rock bands in favour of a quick fire pop act.

Things like moving Jools Holland show to prime time, a new music show for upcoming artists, etc would definitely help balance out the music industry in the long term.

Jools Holland hosted a show with Paula Yates called The Tube that played live music and covered other forms of entertainment. Perhaps reviving that type of format not necessarily with Jools for prime time TV would be better?

Wikipedia article on The Tube here.

I suppose it's tough trying to discover bands when you're young and skint. I personally try and see every thing I can in the local area but as that is remote from any "scene" I have to spend an absolute fortune seeing live music. And live is where it's at. Big bands are having to make their cash from shows now that internet piracy has made single and album sales a fraction of what they used to be. Unfortunately, in the old days, the media we were fed such as Radio 1, Top of the Pops etc, the Tube and Old Grey Whistle Test were packed with artists expressing their art. Nowadays what we have is factory bred money making dirge that nobody will be listening to in 6 months let alone in 20-30 years. I don't know what the solution is but I'm guessing things will go full circle and some modern day pirate radio equivalent will appear and be adopted by a new generation.

There are loads of great bands out there, the trouble is that the signal to noise ratio nowadays is very poor. You can cross funeral for a friend off that list though, I saw them and their 2 support acts last night. Pretty pump would be my informed opinion.

Technically I think the likes of Biffy, Black Keys, and QOTSA don't qualify as new.

QOTSA are late 90s or earlier if you count their formation from Kyuss, and have released numerous albums and side-project records. Likewise, Black Keys have released about 6 albums, and I think Biffy is on about album 5 also.

I`m generally with you here and guessing I`m the same age ( roughly ). But...on people getting the lineups they deserve I`m wondering if the wayjam man has a point in there somewhere. If they are not there in the first place you aint going to find them. Sadly the current music scene is a mess for various reasons. As was said a few posts earlier the acts missing from T are hardly new. It`s worrying for all festivals I reckon when you look 2-3 years ahead and try and imagine who are the potential headliners out there. Big ticket sellers just now are the rolling stones, bruce springstein and the stone roses. On the horizon we have the Oasis reunion. Worrying times I fear. I agree the lineup is crap but have some sympathy with the bookers when they have 3 days to fill. Perhaps 3 day festivals will die off over the next decade.
