The Nal
Great interview here with Yella Well, "great" possibly an over statement but interesting anyway. Edited September 1, 2015 by The Nal
When Jokers Attack
I also watched Love and Mercy over the weekend, Brian Wilson biopic. brilliant as expected, different than most music biopics as it just focuses on a set period of his life. Paul Dano plays him during Pet Sounds period and John Cusack during his illness in the 80's. Both storylines run parallel to each other. The Nal
Never even heard of that! Must check it out. I usually don't like Hollywood music bios but Compton has given me hope. Actually better interview with Ice Cube here
The Nal
Watched Southpaw last night. Decent in parts but forgettable. We've all seen that movie before. Would've been a bit of a mess without Gyllenhaal in it.
DomDom1984
Can't argue with the last sentence. I actually thought he lifted the movie into extremely watchable territory. Probably better than his Nightcrawler performance, which is saying something. The other highlight was his relationship with Forest Whitaker. The Nal
You can hardly hear what's being said at points as well. Thats almost Nolans signature style now. Even pre Bane. Lots of fast chatty dialogue thats sometimes difficult to hear to make the movie seem very intelligent.
TheGayTent
Don't get the love for Nightcrawler - thought it was average at best and Gyllenhaal's performance was worse than that. Looking forward to Black Mass.

Looking forward to Black Mass. It's pretty long, but I think Film Critic Hulk is spot on about Nightcrawler (he's also pretty much the best film writer out there): http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2015/01/09/film-crit-hulk-smash-nightcrawler-and-why-movies-dont-need-character-arcs Depp's makeup in the Black Mass trailer is so bad he doesn't even look human. viberunner
I saw a good quality BluRay rip on a TV on a fairly cheap (but functional) Yamaha soundbar and I didn't have any problems making out any of the talk. There are also a vast amount of EQs you can put through most TVs and sound setups (e.g. Live, Pop, Rock type thing) and some of them bring out voices much more than others. Can he and other directors not just be like the Coen Brothers and make it very clear?! Is he ashamed of his dialogue or something.

Winslow Leach
Just watched The Beach again. Porcelain & Pure Shores I watched The Beach again last week actually. It's really not very good, is it?
Bisque
Speaking of HD RIPS from the Usual Sources... finally got to see AGE OF ULTRON. I think having low expectations helped, but I enjoyed it (I'm not a MCU fan), hell I enjoyed it a hell of a lot more than ASSEMBLE. House mate managed to find an HD rip somewhere just after I watched a decent stream on p*******r the night before. I preferred it second time round. The Captain America/Thor's hammer scene is one of the funniest things I've seen in the Marvel films. I watched The Beach again last week actually. It's really not very good, is it? I enjoy the first half then it just gets boring when he goes off into the jungle. Keaty is the best character. The beach is apparently a bit of a dump now due to over tourism. Spindles
This is a recommended VLC eq setting I've seen for films where the dialogue is muffled compared to the backing track/effects, it sounds much better to me and I've read alot of other people commending it, easy enough to translate to any eq. http://imageshack.com/i/jnp5pkp

I don't watch on VLC (but do use the EQ for my audio on it) but my TV has a few presets for visual and audio and I have my audio on a "boom boom action" preset but I can move it to a dialogue-heavy preset if required. Note, as I say, I didn't actually need to do this for Interstellar. But Bane was kind a mumbly, I do agree on that.
DomDom1984
The Visit is the first movie for a while where it was impossible for me to have expectations either way. Turns out it's not bad at all. Some superb characters and a surprisingly good script make it more than watchable.
DomDom1984
The ending is pish aye, but there's some quality stuff. When I left I didn't know if it was really good, or so bad it was good. I'm settling for a bit of both. There was certainly some "oh, get to fuck" moments which made me laugh, and also some downright great horror scenes. One in particular... The mobile phone moving on the "stalled" screen. ...was one of the most creepy scenes ever in the found footage genre.
ClemFandango97
Catching up session was in order this week: 1. Straight Outta Compton was great, especially the first half. Brilliant performances, Jason Mitchell's award-worthy. Last hour got a bit messy though even if I did think they handled E's death in a very respectful and heart wrenching way. 2. American Ultra was a lot of fun. Sure it's dumb but the action is brilliantly inventive, Eisenberg is perfect for that role and that Walton Goggins character who lost his teeth was hilarious. 3. M:I Rogue Nation was fantastic, my favourite of the series as it involved the likes of Simon Pegg and the lead female character much more than Ghost Protocol, the villain was better, set pieces were all brilliant and it blended the fun aspects with grittier stuff. Film of the summer.
ClemFandango97
Definitely intrigued by The Visit but trying to convince my buddies to see an M Night film is near impossible even with solid reviews, will have to wait for it to pop up online. viberunner
Went to see Legend at the local licenced cinema with four litres of San Miguel (it was on offer) and a packet of cheese Ritz. Enjoyed it, total "modern recreation of London 60s" and plenty of "gor blimey guv'ner" and in particular Ronnie veers dangerously into Tommy Cooper territory, but well worth a watch. Tom Hardy gives the whole thing 210%
metallimuse
Really enjoyed Tom Hardy in Legend but the film as a whole I thought was a turkey. What was the story?I thought it touched on many things but if someone asked me for the plot I'd be at a loss to explained. Seeing two Tom Hardy's at once as well really just seemed unnatural, nothing against his skills. Plus the melody the kept playing reminded me of a U2 song which kept snapping me out of the film. I know a films bad if I'm checking my watch to see how long it's taking sadly. But still,Tom Hardy owns.
Amy Lawn
Apparently there's a Mary Poppins sequel in the offing. I think I speak for us all when I say; what the fuck?
DomDom1984
I'm with muse here. Legend is saved by Hardy. They were as well playing the Benny Hill music at times.
frostypaw
It is just me who finds anything glorifying the Kray twins a bit odd? Does it? I've not seen/read enough to know what tone it finally lands on Edited September 16, 2015 by frostypaw
