I'm sorry, but I've just watched Room, and am I missing something?

How is The Revenant winning these awards? Room is a far far superior flick. As is Spotlight, but Room for me should be winning everything! It's a glorious pic. An emotionally draining journey of a watch but good god wasn't it marvellous?

Unlike some on here and others I know, I actually liked the Revenant, but it does not touch or come close to Room. It should IMO hands down win the Oscar....

Not seen Room yet, but its definitely in my targets soon. mad max just gave me a headache, it was OK, but I was praying for the end in the last 40 minutes, it was hard work.

Spotlight was absolutely fantastic. Everyone in it was totally believable and interesting to watch.

But I still say Revenant cleans up at the oscars.

I don't think The Revenant does. Even Best Director might be a push if the big shocker does indeed come through, and George Miller snatches that, which he might well do. Spotlight is the favourite, and I can't see anything else winning best picture.

Tom Hardy for Best Supporting might be a decent shout, and he was definitely a showstealer. Under worse hands, that character could almost have been cartoonish. Hardy played it exceptionally and he'd deserve it. Strong category though.

I saw Room yesterday and I completely agree, it's completely astonishing. It's just so overwhelming as an experience, and in a far more satisfying way than The Revenant. I really can't imagine seeing a better sequence all year than the one in the back of the truck.

Of the Oscar best picture films, I'd probably go for:

Room
Spotlight
Mad Max/ Brooklyn
The Big Short
Bridge of Spies
The Martian/The Revenant

Yes indeed. That scene had me nearly standing up due to the tension. Really well done. I was entirely swept up and "involved"

It wasn't just the tension for me though (although I was actually sweating during it), it was just that overwhelming sense of something seismic and transcendent happening. It was the experience people always talk about having at the end of 2001 (which I do like, but I'm not mad about) or that I had the first time I saw the final montage in The New World or the glass sliding across the table in Stalker.

Agreed about Room. Nice nod to Stalker there, Winslow, that's a great comparison. Was nail-biting content far superior to any Hollywood action film in recent memory.

I absolutely loved the narration from the child, hearing this kid and how he sees the world after only knowing the Room was facinating. The writing was specifically fantastic.

I think I'd still go for Spotlight as my favourite, but Room is one hell of a film.

Seen all the best pic noms now. Can't choose between Room and The Revenant - both amazing in very different ways. I don't think i've ever seen a film with more impressive cinematography than The Revenant. Lubezki should be a shoo-in for the hattrick. Saw Room months ago but it has stuck with me ever since - the sign of a great film. Wild Tales was my favourite film of the past year but it qualified for last year's Oscars due to American release date. Needs to be seen by more people

1) Room

1) The Revenant

3) The Martian

4) Spotlight

5) BoS

6) Brooklyn

7) The Big Short

8) Mad Max- took 3 attempts to get through this. Never been so bored in a film

Three way shootout for best pic between Revenant, Spotlight & Big Short according to the bookies with The Revenant strong favourite. Room is a huge 125/1

Thought Room was good, not as good as the book of course but much better than I expected! We really enjoyed Spotlight as well, yet to see any of the others as of yet....

( No idea how you can find Mad Max boring? Awesome movie! )

We watched The Mermaid the other night, we were the only non-Chinese people in a completely full screening and everyone stared at us until the film started....  it was hilarious though, up there with Troll 2 and The Room

I had pretty low expectations for Deadpool but thought it might be a laugh or 'fun' as people here have stated but it managed to be so excruciatingly average that it still turned out to be a disappointment. Not good

Haven't seen it but the marketing campaign made it look excruciating. Best description I saw was that it looked like "a film for people who still think putting the Bible in the fiction section is edgy and hilarious."

Yeah, all the way through I couldn't stop thinking 'I bet I would've loved this when I was 14'. Didn't help that the plot was so superhero by-the-numbers that it was painful to watch and the villain was absolute dogshit and posed zero threat

On the other end of the spectrum, I recently watched both Spotlight and The Big Short and they were both fantastic. Hoping to watch Room soon - people's praise of it on here have got me amped for it!

I did find The Big Short interesting and it did help to clarify some of the more confusing jargon of that whole story, but I did think that as a film it was a total mess.

Gosling should definitely be getting the plaudits over Bale though.
