Saw Spider-Man: No Way Home the other day, basically just smiled the whole way through. Really fun. Few plot holes mind.

I saw Marix 4, I wouldn't say it's shit as I preferred it over the over sequels but it doesn't touch the original but nothing ever will. There's problems with it as the action is less Matrix and more 00s direct to DVD Matrix knock off, a few characters are back who seem completely unnecessarily to be there and it's less meta and more fist punching on the nose. With that said there's some really cool ideas in it Keanu and Moss haven't lost a step.

I also saw Bond. SPOILERS I really didn't like the McGuffin of him having a kid he needs to save now otherwise it's a better than average Craig Bong film. The nurse from Knives Out stole the show for me, I wanted to see more of her rather than the 5/10mins she is in it for.

If don’t look up was 45 mins shorter it would be great. Superb cast.

The film definitely overstayed its welcome with its length. No idea why it was nearly 3 hours. Felt like I was watching an unnecessary directors cut at times.

Saw West Side Story yesterday. Hadn’t seen the original or play so was completely new to me. 

Really enjoyed it. Much easier to follow than most productions of Romeo and Juliet I’ve seen.

Good cast and singing and dancing and sets.  No subtitles for when the Puerto Ricans  speak in Spanish. It was still clear what they were saying. 

For some reason I thought the whole thing too quiet, but that may have been the cinema at fault. 

Tiny bit too long for my liking. (2.5h)

Watched Spiral on Prime (latest in the Saw series for those who don't know) and it tries to do something a little different for the series but sort of doesn't fully commit to it. It's more of a police thriller than torture porn but it still has the gory stuff.

 

Has a scene with shocking exposition going on but I enjoyed Chris Rock's performance in it.

 

The twists are quite obvious too.

Best movies of the year lists are always annoying as Hollywood will try to release their Oscar fodder films in Dec to make them eligible for the Oscars but then release them in the UK in Feb to capitalise on Oscar Buzz. I'm pretty sure I watched both Sound of Metal and Promising Young Women in 2020 so they aren't here depsite both would have easily gotten onto 2021's list for me and I've not had a chance to see Nightmare Alley yet. Anyway here's mine;

My fave films this year...Limbo, The Power of the Dog, Green Knight, Dune...that's all I saw at the cinema and all I can think of...wanted to see Lamb but have missed that, anyone seen that?! My daughter drags me along to see MCU films but I don't know...they're ok...bit confusing, bit too much...don't tell her I said that though.

Watched Don't Look Up last night. Liked it, thought it was funny, depressing, profound.

I saw Matrix Resurrections in the gap between Christmas and NY and it's a very odd film. I'd gone into it thinking I might see a self-hating sequel that exists purely to slag itself off for existing, which is the vibe I got from reviews, but it didn't quite go far enough to do that. There were some scenes at the start like that, but the second half wasn't. Neil Patrick Harris' character was good, as was Jonathan Groff's Smith, but it was fairly inessential imo.

Spiderman No Way Home was fun if nothing else. Don't Look Up I didn't find to be that funny (though the post-credit scenes were), but I thought it sold itself pretty well overall.

Boiling Point is great. Best film Ive seen in a while. Actually maybe the first new movie Ive watched in a couple of years. Think Joker was the last one.

Yeah, I went into it thinking it's meant to be this gen's Doctor Strangelove but it's jokes just weren't sharp enough. It's portrayal of denialism was spot on but at the same time with Trump, Covid, Black Lives Matter, Brexit, Climate Change etc I've seen that sort of satire/portrayal done to death for the last few years already.

There are definitely moments in Don't Look Up that have the "Yeah we wanna be funny but this is serious fucking shit and this is part of our point" feel to it. Adam McKay even said as such in his interviews in a more over-arching way, given quite a lot of coverage about this film was about him saying he's split with long time collaborator Will Ferrell and that getting more attention.

I quite liked his Dick Cheney film Vice, but maybe it's easier to take it on board as more of a straight-face film than broad comedy. I do like the ending in fairness, and I get why a lot of climate scientists are totally on board with it. But I'm not sure it went far enough for me to find it more than a respectable movie.

For my sins I decided it was a good idea to go to see the Uncharted movie on Monday during a day off. Actually ended up being better than I was fearing. I love the games so was expecting a standard thing where it struggles to get to the screen, and did think Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg wasn't the cast in mind. But I did think as it's own thing independent from the games, even with it being like about 20 other movies, it was actually reasonably entertaining.

Bit of a surprise ngl.
