Rolling Stones...

Maybe - and I'll admit this sounds daft even as I'm typing it - it's a crowd management technique to try and move people around the site a bit prior to them starting. The Scream into the Stones with 45 minutes behind them would ensure that a lot of people would be staying put there most of the evening.

fuck i really don't know what i'm gonna do for that 90 minutes between Scream and the Stones. it's either stay in the good position i('m assuming i) have but have to wait for ages or go and do something else for an hour or so but risk not being able to get back into the crowd and having to watch from right at the back. hmm

Yep. You've got it exactly right. Bore the piss out of people.

"Not hanging around here for 90 minutes lads - feck that for a game of darts." etc

It will defintely mean primal scream get a much small crowd than they otherwise would have I reckon

For sure - the whole "well I might as well stay to get a good spot for the Stones" equation has been totally knocked for six. I think a lot of ppl will be re-evaluating their Saturday lead-in plans now....

.... of course this could also mean a major influx of people at, say, a half hour till kickoff...

Really not fussed about seeing Primal Scream again, so I'm going to go see something else like The Proclaimers and show up about an hour beforehand. Think that should be OK.

What's your guess on the optional songs?

I'd be more than happy with 'Can't You Hear Me Knocking?' 'Angie and 'Street Fighting Man' ( I think 'Angie' is quite likely because everyone knows it); and 'Silver' and 'Happy' for Keef. Unlikely to get all that though, I guess..

I can't decide if this gap is a stroke of genius or idiocy. My worry is that people bugger off after the scream, then all pile into the field 20 minutes before the stones start.

yeah that could very well happen. obviously some people will stick around in the hope of getting closer etc but i imagine a LOT of people will leave and then all come back at once in the final half an hour. it'll be absolute mayhem

CYHMK feels a little too niche for a festival, but then they did it at IOW - albeit to a pretty muted reaction. It's more likely at one of the Hyde Park shows.

If they're smart the three optional songs should be three bankers - say, Wild Horses, Street Fighting Man and something like Ruby Tuesday or Angie. It's neither the time nor the place for them to do something like She's So Cold or Rock & A Hard Place.

Though two ballads feels a little downbeat and they might want to throw in at least one relative rarity - so, say, something like Street Fighting Man, Wild Horses and Rocks Off would probably satisfy most people.

Likewise Keith should stick to two out of the three he's been playing and keep things like Thief In The Night and Wanna Hold You firmly locked away.

I'd settle for that. :)

Isn't the latter scenario more or less what happens anyway when there are two dissimilar acts on after one another?

Having to wait longer than an hour is definitely going to create way more crowd churn. There's probably a 60 minute threshold to the wait that people are prepared to endure, psychologically speaking.

So, yes, on the whole it's bad news for Primal Scream, but I think it'll actually make getting a decent spot for the Stones closer to stage time all the easier.

Stones 21:30

Steve Winwood 20:00 Acoustic
Wayne Kramer 19:30 Leftfield
Johnny Marr 18:20 John Peel

Elvis Costello 17:15 Pyramid

I'm gonna check Costello and the Stones. In between however there are three intruiging prospects spread out all over the site. Need a quad-bike to get around to all of 'em however! Lot will depend on how the "going" is underfoot.

i can kind of see myself forgoing Primal Scream now for somebody else (who i haven't figured out yet) just to avoid all the bullshit back and forth from the Pyramid etc. see somebody else, get to the Pyramid an hour / 45 mins before the Stones come on and work way into the crowd

edit: Rodriguez! sorted
