ok apart from fingertips, the chanting about god bit, the hater-ade bit, the keytar, the happy birthday, etc it wasnt cheesy at all...

Alright, the first 3 on your list get a pass... but the keytar was EPIC and the Happy Birthday made the field go apeshit. The "relationshit" gag was a stinker however.

Standard sort of American stuff really. They love God and "Jesus Christ" these soulful yankee doodles.

Tone - Agree The Stones came with low expectations - just don't be total shit basically - but they were great regardless. Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Sympathy for the Devil and You Cant Always Get What You Want are as good as I've seen at the festival. Or anywhere else.

Keefs sloppy guitar solos are to be expected. He was walking around for a lot of the gig. I'm sure he could've done a Clapton and stood still and sounded better, as Jagger could have, but it wouldn't have been anywhere near as entertaining. They're not a jazz band.

hey I'm not criticising it in any way whatsoever! I loved all the bits I've mentioned.

but it was a cheese-fest!

speaking about this has just made me remember his version of human nature. How good was that bit

singing Happy Birthday with Michael, horrendously out of tune, was about as perfect an end to the 40th Glasto as there could have been

and Fingertips was great too

and the intro, on his own playing the keytar, as Woody says, was fantastic.

don't remember a 'god is good' bit....

"God Is Good" is Stevie's stock intro to Master Blaster.

I agree with you, I wasnt saying it was bad at all, but to say it wasnt cheesy...

the only intro to a headline set at glastonbury I've ever seen better than stevies was bowies, and that was only because he was cool as all fuck

the more I think about it the more I think I am going to look back and think the stones were actually better than macca. Macca was wonderful but I still have reservationas about the setlist......

I enjoyed them more yeah. And I loved Macca but the crowd were more up for The Stones.

Elaborate on this...

well it was an extraordinary setlist dont get me wrong, and It was a great gig, but I have seen setlists of his since that would have suited my tastes more is all.

There are songs he's played since that would have let me die happy had I seem then played at glastonbury.

In terms of time-machine gig going over the past 15 years or so, Macca at Glasters is the first date in the DeLorean.

We can nitpick at any show. Truth be told, some of the shows we're talking about are amongst the best that any of us will ever see. Again it is remarkable that we're in a position to place the Stones alongside such brilliant performances. Their recent showings (at least a bit earlier back in the tour) and history were not on their side. But they triumphed. The absolutely triumphed. An instant classic award from this erstwhile naysayer.

Do we think they realised how good they were. Or are they always of the opinion that they're that good, even when they've been as bad as they have relatively recently?

I reckon they must have realised they nailed it. Surely!

I wonder how the gig compares for them? I suppose it just cant come close to what it was like for them in the 70s. But then I wonder can they even remember those days now.

I reckon they realised they nailed it. I just wonder if they always think that. Obviously they'll recognise some as better than others, but due to overly loyal fans and/or golden circles do they always think they're good?

They haven't spoken too much about it but Mick has. "I loved it", "amazingly responsive audience", "crowd was incredible" etc.

No question that it was special for the band. Keith was blown away at the end with the crowd singing the Satisfaction riff back at them.

do you think the glastonbury crowd came close to the south american crowds that always seem to go nuts for the stones? i wonder if it meant more to them as it was a home crowd (though I wonder if they even think of england as home)

Well - they definitely knew how much was at stake. Or at least Mick did. Jokes about yurts aside, he was onsite, he checked out the Arctic Monkeys the night before and re-wrote Factory Girl especially for the occasion. A few jokes and a costume change aside, even Hyde Park II didn't really get any special treatment.

Interesting. How, in your opinion, could they have improved it?

I thought they got it bang on - it just felt like a succession of aces being served into the face of the crowd.

Just personal preferences which I was prepared to cast aside for the greater good. Maybe 5 of the songs would go into my ideal Stones setlist but it was all about the overall experience at Glastonbury and for that, it had to be a greatest hits set.

Very nit-picky but...

Much as I loved 2,000 Light Years, It didn't go down great compared to the rest of the songs. It was probably a nod to a psycodelic festival vibe but as such I think She's a Rainbow would have been better or maybe I'm Free. I can think of loads that I'd personally have prefered to hear. I don'y know how well it would have gone down but for the Stones fans, Sweet Virginia in it's place would have been epic. For the none fans maybe Ruby Tuesday.

Still... one song out of a 2 hour set. Can't complain about that.
