Rolling Stones...

As for other big name headliners at Glastonbury.

Looks like I missed 'em all apart from U2 and maybe Coldplay if you count them.

I've seen Macca a couple of times and he was brilliant on each occasion. I imagine he would have been superb at Glastonbury.

I chose Ash over Stevie.

Blur, Bruce & Neil all the same year and I wasn't there :(

Blur are a band I like but only really on a greatest hits basis.

Bruce I've seen twice. One disappoining and one fantastic (Check out the Manchester gig from 2012 for a setlist to die for)

Neil - never seen him live but that will change in a couple of weeks.

I really enjoyed U2 but seem to be in the minority.

Coldplay were superb. Who knew?

Atmos/crowd at Blur was miles better than the Stones btw folks.

i think little contributing part of that was the overall feeling that it had been just an amazing Glastonbury and it was coming to a close. 2009 was a great year, everyday just had me feeling great afterwards. the weather turned out fine ....and there seemed to just be a truly festive atmosphere come sunday evening, even if it ruined the enjoyment of Nick Cave pre-Blur, because peeps were just having fun in the crowd waiting for Blur (while I was dashing back and forth catching the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Madness, Bon Iver, Nick Cave, Blur finale..what a finish...)

the more I think about it the more I think I am going to look back and think the stones were actually better than macca. Macca was wonderful but I still have reservationas about the setlist......

For years I thought Macca in 04 was "that gig" i could always talk about, but the Stones surpassed that for me as well. Perhaps it was just the choices I made that day...i skipped out on a lot i could have seen (Rodriguez, Johnny Marr, Alabama Shakes, Winwood) and kept my musical day to Billy Bragg, Lou Rhodes, and then the final 3 at the Pyramid all well within the barrier...and it worked out well for me (esp when i hear that Rodriguez was dire) .It was just one of those wonderful music days for me that i'll always remember. sort of like the Saturday of '03

2004 was my least favorite Glastonbury, even thuogh i got to see a few great sets (PJ Harvey, Elbow). That Saturday just wasn't a pleasant day for me. Macca made up for it, but it was nothing like my Saturday with the Stones this year.

re" Macca's setlist, Wooderson - surely i remember he opened up with "Jet"? or was your list just a sequence u were pointing out?

Yep. Just referencing the main sequence of songs he played.

2004 was a funny one. 2003 was so perfect in many ways that 2004 was always going to struggle.

2004 was a good year overall though, and definitely better than average I'd say (in terms of weather and lineup).

2004 was ace.

the weather was mixed wasnt it? Sunshine and showers thurs/fri/sat then sunny all day sunday? I cant quite recall it.

Just looking at the line up, I had forgotten there was so much good stuff on that year. Definitely a good one. I was with a girlfriend who was new to the festival. Good times.

I tell you who I enjoyed that year, the killers in the john peel tent. Dont hate me!

edit: ugh just realised that was the year arthur lee played and I missed it :(

another one of my favourite performances

ever...

how do you come to miss them russy?

god knows, you know how it is at glastonbury. The best laid plans often fall to pieces once you're inside the fence, far too many distractions!

though it does seem much easier to stick to a plan of action these days. Probably my age...

The Killers were great! Thats about their level.

I was at Arthur Lee in the Acoustic on the Friday night. Sublime stuff altogether. One of the best gigs I've ever seen at Glasto. Maybe the best ever in a tent. The place was rocking.

He played in 03 outdoors too. I cant find any footage of the 04 gig.

Would damn near bring a tear to your eye.

One of my all time favourite pieces of music. When the strings kick it at about 2.30

Nobody here thinks any less of you, Russy. Their first album was fun for a few listens, and the second one was actually a properly good album, nothing new but it's a great love letter to Americana, I wont hear a bad word about it.

I really enjoyed the Rutles in 2004. Maybe it was (IMO) better than Arthur Lee. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed seeing him play. But Rutles=>McCartney was the biz.

Marquee Moon was better than You Set the Scene aswell Nallo.

:O

Rutles was fun but to paraphrase a great review of the Prodigys Fat of the Land - they were Hulk Hogan to Arthur Lee's Mike Tyson.

Just not in the slightest bit comparable. Silly, enjoyable throwaway comedy numbers vs a genuine powerhouse of music.

Found/find Lee's paranoia a bit much. Bar the obvious stuff he's a bit twee into the bargain. An absolute gnat in comparison to his contemporaries Hendrix, Wilson, Garcia etc.

Forever Changes (and I own at least 3 different copies of it) is one of those unique records that has gone from being underappreciated to being way OVER appreciated.

Rutles on the other hand was unique panto craic that only happens once a decade.

"You think you're happy and you are happy, thats what you're happy for".

Perfect lyrics from a complete maniac.

Crap lyrics and crap melody into the bargain. The 'Disney' strings at the end impressed less acute and experienced ears when I was younger.

I think that people are the greatest fun...

.........And I will be alone again tonight my dear.

Poor bastard.

Tony's going to kill you for that....

And Wooderson is a big Grateful Dead fan! Not happy with Love's melody and lyrics?! Weird.

Forever Changes, complete, from beginning to end, with string section (that you could hear), with Your Mind And We Belong Together as encore...on a sunny afternoon..

about as perfect a set as I've encountered

bah. he's in a good mood today it seems :(

Poor bastard? Bryan MacLean?

As lyricists I think JP B-Low and Bob Hunter are in a different league to MacLean and Lee's stuff.

Melody wise, zero comparison.

Lee makes 1.5 decent records and he's being compared to the Grateful Dead now is he? :hi:
