Best/Worst Covers

Sure people can come up with good examples where an act's cover version worked and failed at Glasto. Wish I could get my mits on the version of "Uncle John's Band" that CSN played in 2009. I remember Nashy (or was it Croz?) saying "This is for our friend Jerry Garcia, he wouldve loved this place..." or who could forget Stevie's turn at MJ's "Human Nature" that same year... think that Futureheads' "Hounds of Love" was (is?) the highlight of their bloody set!

Anyway, lets do "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." The worse the cover version the better lads! hahaha

Stick up youtube vids where possible. Dig deep into the memory banks!

The Good: Shakey's "A Day in the Life" from '09 -> as good as live music gets.

The Bad: Arctic's "Diamonds are Forever" from '07 -> as hammy as a butcher's window

The Ugly: Weller's "Ohio" from '94 -> an absolute mess.

The Good: Gomez used to extend 78 Stone Wobble out into a cover of Not Fade Away by Buddy Holly, they did this in 99 and it was awesome as I remember.

The Bad: Mark Ronson - shitting on the Smiths.

The Ugly: I have a memory from 2003 (I think) of sitting in our campsite at Pennards, hearing something dire coming from the Other Stage. I have no recollection of who it was, I was happily ingoring it until I heard the unmistakeable opening trumpets of Stevie's Sir Duke. Whoever that was then proceeded to murder a classic for five whole minutes. A prime example of when the "if you don't like it, go somewhere else" argument falls over; there was no escape. We could only have gone towards it!

The worst thing I have ever heard was walking through the Other stage a few years back and some dreadlocked bufoon covering Bohemian Rhapsody. I don't like that song at the best of times, but that version was absolutely execrable.

Just checked online - Newton Faulkner

"All Things Must Pass" is a superb shout Russ. As is "Not Fade Away" - didnt know they played that.

Not that the Floyd are my bag by any means but RodyGab's take on "WYWH" felt lovely. Didnt the FLips absolutely nail "Breathe" in '03?

From the "bad" pile didnt those wet flannel's Travis do "Can't Get you Outta My Head" before? Shocking.

From the "ugly" pile, Bono's snippets of "Independent Women", "Jerusalem", "Movin' on Up" and "Yellow" made me billious on the night.

HA!

Florence's 'version' of "The Chain" was dog-rough. Think our own soul-brother Neil was in attendance at that and it nearly ruined his weekend.

She has some serious beef with the Mac.

I happened to be walking past. i wouldn't have chosen to be within a mile of Flo.

The best bit about it were the comments I heard, such as....

"oh, this must be a new Florence song", and

"why is playing tjhe grand prix theme tune?"

Those Flo fans are well classy.

Of course, along with Day in the Life, Stevie's We Can Work it Out would go straight to the top of the Good list. But considering he recorded it 40 years previous and has been playing it live ever since its kind of cheating I guess
