Why are people suggesting festivals are becoming more unpopular?

No bands have really developed that much of late to become new headliners. I don't think a band in Britain has reached sky high fame since Arctic Monkeys broke through in what, 2006? Although saying that, I can see The Vaccines and The Black Keys making it massive sooner or later

Lots of reasons pay frozen but bills going up, student fees, higher ticket prices, over saturation, same bands headlining, bad weather, better alternatives abroad(my opinion tourette), predictable lineups.

I could go on.

I also think festivals are trying too hard to cater for the youth every year as well. A few years back we were right in the middle of festivals being the in thing with the kids, I'd say they are back/ going back out of fashion. So as festivals are trying and have tried in the past to appeal to a younger audience they have lost some of the regulars.

As festivals pay for exclusivity due to the relative small size of the UK booking prices rise and so it continues, management will look to get the best deal they can for acts and I've heard promoters and bands mention they pay / get paid a lot more for slots in the UK than on the continent due to the demand for the acts.

This is the main reason why you normally see much better (when i say better i mean with more established bands) line ups outside of the UK.

Not necessarily. It's possible to be neither popular or unpopular, my point was to be careful of using a negative phrase (or at least one with negative connotations) like 'unpopular' when it may not be the most accurate way to describe the apparent downward trend in ticket sales. I think there's a subtle but important difference between 'less popular' and 'more unpopular' that a University-level assignment should probably consider investigating.
