jackarmy
Surely Pete Doherty qualifies as mainstream?

kaosmark2
I'm not saying a good band, but they were a top band. They played high slots in all the major festivals and sold something like 3 million records.its not like they were playing pubs and clubs and opened the festival republic stage. neilloggie
I suppose we have not heard 'hang the bastard'. Yet.
Millar95
Nope I wouldnt include any of these my mum with no interest in music would know gallagher, albarn and cocker but none of these 3. I suppose the closest I could think would be Pete Doherty.
pink_triangle
Would your mum know him as a frontman though? Or just the fact that he has been plastered all over the tabloids within the last few years? I would say 90% of people I know of all ages wouldn't have a clue that he was the frontman of a successful band
wee_insomniac
It was the headline story on Radio 1 for most of yesterday...
neilloggie
She would know he is a musician but wouldnt know the band. In reality it doesnt really matter why she knows him, the discussion was why the alleged scandal hadnt recieved more publicity and and the answer is because he isnt known by the mainstream as either a musician or a celebrity. 2rare2die
I would say lost prophets profile has fallen significantly over the last few years as has pop/rock in general. However even at their peak he wasnt really a huge star. Since the days of Gallagher, Albarn and Cocker Im not sure there has been a high profile frontman although Im probably forgetting someone. mrtourette
The link to the story on the BBC front page was 'Rock star arrested on charges of blah blah blah', if that isn't a blatant lie designed to draw people in I don't know what is. Although as with Doherty notoriety gained through the press for things other than music may raise his profile and make him a 'rock star' in the eyes of non-music fans. jump
The whole thing seems lower profile than i thought it would be. I was expecting it to be front page news on all the papers and headline news on TV.Even the red tops only had about a quarter of a page on it and its not even on the main news page on teletext. Radio 1 barely mentioned it and you have to scroll down quite a few pages on the news websites to find it.Even the welsh papers only has the basic facts on it. To have the high profile singer of a top band arrested for child abuse is surely a huge story.for some reason one of Savilles mates, who most of us have never heard of, being arrested for the same thing is dominating the headlines. Maybe Watkins has friends in high places.
