Classical Music

I've always like classical music, mostly of what my father listened to when I was a kid and the scores from films, but to be honest i just like what I hear and don't really know what I'm listening to...

So, what would you recommend?

Ask a simple question why don't you, given the hundreds of years it has been around.

Try Gorecki, especially Sympohony No 3.

I am partial to Bach, especially the Brandenberg Concertos. I like Mozarts operas and a great deal of Wagner. It is the one genre that I have over a thousand albums and each has its own merits and nuances. I honestly don't know were to start, although I guess I started with Bach and Toccata and Fugue in D minor after watching Fantasia and the Blue Danube by Johanne Strauss from 2001, way back in the '70's

What an idea is to go into HMV and you can get a cd brand called Naxos and they do best of discs for all the major composers for a couple of quid. Try Classic FM. I find them more accessible in their choices than Radio 3

Try the film score from Death in Venice (breathtakingly beautiful film too). Particularly the adagietto from Mahler's Fifth Symphony.

Been listening to a lot recently and really enjoying it.

Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring is 100 years old today. A scary ass and beautiful piece of music. John Williams must have been an uber fan.

Must have sounded like the apocalypse to people back then.

Going to see Antonio Forcione do a special performance of his last album with Goldsmiths Big String Orchestra in a couple of weeks... does that count?

Also, I saw Laura Mvula last night... a cellist, violin player (her brother and sister as it happens..), and a harpist... a bit classical-ish... well maybe not. She's too original, I think, to be called classical.

probably my favourite piece of classical music. Haunting and magnificent. Usually not a fan of choral works, but this is something else.

OK, maybe I do like choral music, or maybe I just like Requiems, which is a bit weird, but death does inspire amazing art.
