I think its more that rancid perceive themselves to be bigger than they actually are.

True, but I'd say they were around the same size as bad religion, rise against and jimmy eat world who've also headlined in recent years. Billy talent too although they probably weren't as big when they headlined.

It comes down to a "punk" band not wanting to play in a small tent and demanding more money than the lock up can afford.

They were in Europe last August as they played Rebellion (I think), don't know if R&L tried to get them for last year though.

*EDIT* Also did anyone else get surprised by how Tim Armstrong looks now? I was really genuinely surprised (not in a bad way) when he came on stage looking chunky and beardy compared to when I last saw them play.

Rancid were awesome at the forum in december, would love to see them at reading, still cant see them playing the lock up, the tent would be chaos

5th seems a fairly standard place for acts of their size and style ala Dropkick Murphys, NOFX and Rise Against.

I don't think Against Me! are big enough to headline Lock Up imo. 3rd down last time without having really gotten any bigger since then and lost the major label support they had then too.

About time Pennywise came back now.especially with Jim back in the band.

Propaghandi would be a greart alternative from the usual bands we seem to get on rotation on the lock up.Though i personally don't mind seeing Alkaline trio,NoFx,Anti-flag,Less than jake and the like every couple of years.

Bas Religion sound a good shout with a new album out and Reel Big Fish seem to be permanenntly touring at the mo so also likely.

Their profile has raised big time since Tom's sex change so maybe they could headline.Their management have done a good job of raising their profile since the op and it has given them the edge over many bands of similar status.

I wouldn't be surprised if Rancid did the double duty and played on both main & Lock Up if they make an appearance, apparently they are fans of Mike Davies show and it may be a way around their fee if it's a problem.

It's about time Rancid played the main stage again. FR have booked NOFX and Gogol Bordello recently, so it's not like they would be something completely different, and I'd wager Rancid would be more popular than those two.

Hopefully with the new record they'll be doing some Euro fests, I think they only did Groezrock and Rebellion last year.

Heard rumours about Pianos Became The Teeth touring with Touce Amoré in the uk this summer, don't know how likely it is TA playing 2 years in a row, but I hope they do, they killed it last year

If they were to make the lock-up stage a 3 day thing then they could have acts like Parkway Drive and Archtitects etc playing which would be kinda cool but I doubt that will happen.
