grumpyhack
We've had sink council estates built all over South Wales, mainly by Labour authorities, for years. Usually situated on the top of desolate windswept hillsides to hide the awkward buggers away. They're now where I mainly teach and I love it because you really do get people committed to trying to do something for their communities. Guest
It seems the suggestion here is that cant happen when you only have rich people in an area... Sure that doesn't stack up..

Guest
People hold very different values... Yeah I care for my wife and kid.... I don't really care about the general public the same way... Edited February 14, 2013 by tonyblair

mrtourette
I love all this fake outrage at something that's been happening for decades. I think every few days people need to vent their displeasure at life in general, call someone a Tory/Thatcherite and feel a great sense of self-satisifaction that they're a good and decent person (without actually doing anything good or decent about the issue that's causing all of the huffing and puffing) so that they can relax for a few days until the next urge come on. We all talk a good game while stroking our chins.
Stash
The govt spends £24Bn on housing benefit each year. The govt spends just £1Bn on new housing each year. Either Gideon Osbourne can't do simple maths, or he's very deliberately enriching the already-rich who have properties available to rent as well as helping to ensure that there's less jobs than there could otherwise be. I'll leave you to work out which it is.
eFestivals
How different is that to the figures from the last government?I've no idea, tho it was probably much the same. After all, all Thatcherites do similar Thatcherite things. It's not like there was an explosion of social housing building under Labour. There wasn't even any housing building explosion under Labour, which is a big part of why there was runaway house inflation (which made the electorate happy and kept them voting for Smarmy). abdoujaparov
Won't that spirit just be taken up by the new residents ?
abdoujaparov
I think you are overplaying the outcomes... I won't argue at the individual and personal upset this might cause to these people. It wouldn't be easy if I lost my job, my house and had to move either. I am saying the idea the wider community will suffer, community spirit will be damaged by this act alone is some what unbelievable and works off the suggestion that the new comers won't be willing to engage in community spirit. thesecretingredientiscrime
And its not like they're new residents either (that wouldn't make it any better) but the point is this has been happening to deep rooted community figures. abdoujaparov
Like I said I certainly don't doubt the personal issues families will face but communities eb and flow and where you will find groups of people communities will find their level. lost
I think the Liverpool thing is a red herring, I believe the woman doesn't have to accept the offer and looking at the new housing benefit limits there are plenty of places in outer London she could rent just not zone 1. You have to watch it with the Guardian its turned into a left wing daily mail where the story will have to be sensational as possible to foster outrage within its readers. abdoujaparov
Did you purposely ignore his suggestion of living in outer London or do you struggle with reading ? EDIT: How about Reading ? Here you go... http://www.zoopla.co.uk/to-rent/details/27917438?search_identifier=9b05a3597326571d7976f7b6bcfa2ee0 Isn't that under the cap ? http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/property-7031325.html Not putting any effort at all in here....
