Guest
I would hope so, but I'm also grateful that not everyone feels the need to ram how committed to the cause they are down people's throats.
Guest
I didn't mention you. And in answer to your last question no I don't think it's OK to blah blah blah, why do you assume that I do? Or is it one of those 'anyone who doesn't blindly agree with the original argument is Tory scum' situations?

abdoujaparov
I'm not saying people should be able to live anywhere, I'm saying they should be able to stay where they are. abdoujaparov
As far as I can remember the aircraft carriers were ordered by the previous government and have very high get out clauses which mean it would be pointless not to built them now. They did secure a large amount of jobs though in a certain labour constituency in Scotland which was under threat from the SNP.
abdoujaparov
Trident isn't that expensive to mean it being cut it will make a massive difference. The total cost is around £15 billion and the running costs are £2 billion a year. Sounds a lot but in the grand scheme of government spending its not. abdoujaparov
Also... If we drop Trident are you expecting the Yanks to keep theirs and look out for whats "good" ? Or should the west throw them away while North Korea and Iran get them and hold us all to ransom ?
TheGayTent
it's more than a few builds... Shoreditch, Hackney, Dalston have all become much nicer places than they sed to be. This is in part because it became trendy, but also because even when they were 'dumps' they were fairly central, especially for the new city (Canary Wharf). That change was much more natural, and lots of people who have lived there all their lives and are able to enjoy the benefits. Many of them who wouldn't be able to afford to move there now at the current prices...

TheGayTent
It's never been far from the city. It's not moved. Bar a minuscule part of it, Hackney is still a dive. Still has high poverty levels, still has high unemployment, still has bad literacy levels etc. The vast majority of East London is a shithole. It has been for a century. Nothing's changed

TheGayTent
Spitalfields, Hoxton, Shoreditch, Hackney (not so much), Brick Lane, etc, have changed a heck of a lot since I came to London 35 years ago. Highly desirable places to live and go to for a night out
TheGayTent
Your comments about Stratford would be amusing if they weren't so wide of the mark. Yes, what used to be industrial back streets and wasteland is now a big park. The homes haven't changed, neither has the grotty centre. All the locals are left with are a posh shopping centre they can't afford to shop in.

bunique
Soooo....what are the areas that these families are moved to meant to do? No significant increase in council tax revenue, no additional funding from central government, potential for significant strain on resources. I know Stoke for one wouldn't cope with it. bunique
I wouldn't worry about a mass movement in the direction of Stoke
Rufus Gwertigan
Fuck me. Am I the only person to see the irony in that that the less charitable person seems to be the one involved with a loving religion. I pay little in tax but I realise it well get spent on things out of my control. Money saved on benefits will get doubled out elsewhere. For my point I would rather give money to a single parent than fund a soldier. I am proud to live in a country that had Bevsn and Beveridge, yet sad people like Bsrry exist. eFestivals
Fact is rufus people like me overly fund the system. The real fact is very different Barry - else we wouldn't be in the financial shit that we are. The system overfunds you, and not the other way round.
