Vinyl Collectors

Hi,

Just wondered if there's anybody here who buys/sells records as a hobby? It's something I've started doing a little recently and love. Picking up chunks of record collections from car-boot sales, charity shops etc - listening to a wide range of music, selling the odd record that turns out to be valuable.

Found an awesome set on Saturday - first press of Hunky Dorey, It's Only RocknRoll and Let it Bleed. Also picked up Born to Run and a pretty cool live concert of Carlos Santana and Miles Davis.

One thing I'm still no good at is knowing how best to value/sell the records. Any tips for knowing if I've picked up something valuable?

discogs.com is probably the most comprehensive website out there for records! search for it an it will more than likely come up. you can sell individual records and see what others are listing them for. many are overpriced on there tho.

Yeah check discogs, you can usually check for recent sale prices for most releases.

Get the catalog number scratched into the runout groove and then google it. You should be able to figure out the pressing from that although not always.

Hit your local recored stores. Keep an eye out for Recored Store Day in April, artists release one off's with only a limited amount of pressings.

As far as I know the most collectible LP I have is Prince Purple Rain, in purple vinyl, makes me think of searching out values of others....

Record Collector is a good magazine. I buy it sometimes for the articles, but it also has a good ear to what some records are likely to be able to get.

If you're looking in second hand shops and markets for potential collectors items, there are certain labels that are highly desirable.. sometimes just a different font on the label is what makes it valueable. Record Collector is great for finding that sort of thing out

I've never heard of Discogs though....

I have that is it worth anything? I have picked up a few things in second-hand record shops but they are often overpriced. Its easier to collect new stuff from bands that might be the next big thing than find an immaculate copy something from the eighties.
