That's a weird statement. Considering they're headline size across the world and headlined Download, along with the fact they're still pretty damn popular here, I'd say they've gone bigger places.

I did, but I'm still in the camp that say SOAD could headline - it isn't a binary for me, they're big enough to headline but not big enough to not sub

I'd say Slipknot are big enough to headline at a push, but then so are NIN & SOAD. They're all the sort of bands that are at the level of weak headliner if necessary/mega strong sub for R&L. All of them could obviously headline Download, as they're better suited.

I doubt slipknot could headline unless they were to release a pretty big album and download haven't had them yet.

I think it's obvious SOAD were booked in case green day couldn't make it just in case if the push up was needed, but SOAD were bigger than slipknot and bigger earlier than slipknot. Slipknot are probably more polarising than SOAD also.

I think they'd smash it, but I just couldn't see them headlining R&L. Especially when they have other heavier type options available such as Metallica, QOTSA, Sabbath, and even though I hate to say it paramore and 30stm.

I meant that green day were a bit risky what with the health of BIlly Joe just after they had been booked, so SOAD were brought in as a contingency in case Green Day couldn't make it.

From the SOAD interview in kerrang the term 'a really good offer' would seem to suggest they'd been offered a load to play that position.

I think after them pulling off SOAD subbing this year they could get Slipknot to sub. I reckon they could next year to Metallica with a new album. R&L would be the only festival available to them in the UK I think, so they may accept a lower slot.

I'd love to see Slipknot headline R&L, I think they'd be a great, strong booking. But they could be in the same boat as SOAD where a lot of us think they would headline if they played, but end up being one of the biggest, strongest subs ever booked.

I'm not disagreeing that it's a risky book, or that SOAD were offered a lot But I don't think they would book SOAD to play under a band who were weaker than them, eg someone like Mumford/30STM/Paramore.

And that if try had have had confidence in green day they probably wouldn't have gotten such a strong sub and went with someone of a more up and coming cheaper option.

I imagine SOAD were booked with the possibility of headlining if Green Day couldn't do it, however I also imagine they were confident Green Day would be doing it when they chose to announce SOAD.

I just can't see them headline so soon though. 2016 maybe or so...they also have no new material, mainly due to the crying about paul gay etc.
