Probably just saying what he thinks the supporters want to hear, but I think even they know this is nonsense.

Ill advised. Nothing more.

it's more than "ill advised", it's fruitcake land.

If Utd won every game they've got left - and they won't, cos no team does that sort of thing - then they still wouldn't make 4th as long as Liverpool keep up their season's average form.

(and, it should be noted, Liverpool's form is improving rather than going the other way).

Utd have had it this season. Anyone who suggests different is eating that fruitcake.

He's probably been asked the question. He says "nah, we're screwed" then even if it's possible or not, there will be a large number of supporters who will be on his back. I can assure you, looking like a mental is a much better option. Every single club on the planet will have it's large number of fantasists. You have to be wary of them whether you like it or not.

he could have kept it within the bounds of reality and said something like "we'll keep trying for 4th unless/until it's impossible to get 4th".

But I know what you mean.

And anyway, it's still a more-sane comment than the one that came from Fergie's lips at around the same time the Mata deal went thru - that they could still win the league. No wonder fergie had to retire, he's clearly lost his mind.

United's only way in to the CL is winning it. To be fair they have a better squad than we did in 2005, but they also have Moyes.

You sure?

While that Liverpool team wasn't fat with talent, any midfield with both Gerrard and Alonso both in their prime makes a damned good team.

Utd today is what you get when you have no midfield at all.

Squad wise yeah they are stronger. We played Antonio Nunez, Igor Biscan, Djimi Traore etc on our way to Istanbul and our main striker was Milan Baros rather than Rooney/RVP. Midfield was probably stronger though by default....

yeah, I looked up the team to check on Alonso before posting that above, and was quite surprised to see who the team was. Defo not the best in the world.

But even so .... do the likes of Nunez, Biscan, Traore, & Baros really rate that much worse than young, evans, smalling, not-cleverly, jones, nani, valencia, etc, etc?

I'm not so sure there's a massive difference.

There isn't a massive difference at all. The likes of Valencia, Evans and Young are actively bad. Nani is a waste of tremendous talent, and Cleverly seems to be the same as he has shown the attributes to do not bad. Smalling is improving, but not there, and Jones doesn't seem to know WHAT he is.

Manchester City's biggest game in there history, Arsenal playing the European Champions and we are still talking about man utd.

Scrap that the teams we talk about 90% of the time in here are in 4th place and 7th place with no chance of winning a trophy.

Well it seems Man Utd and Liverpool with a little helping of West Ham is all people care about.

Apart from when people are accusing me of being an Arsenal fan, don't forget. :P

You wouldn't know City are a good bet for the domestic treble.

are they any better a bet than what looks to be the best team in the country at any time and they're still in all comps?

They're a fantastic team at their best but they're still fallible.

Unlike Chelsea who are rarely a fantastic team at their best and still fallible.
