Piffle IMO.

Taking and scoring penalties is an art in its own right. If a striker has the balls and the ability to take them then the advantage he has over a striker who hasn't the balls or the ability to take them is a justified one.

while it's an art in it's own right, it's also an art with a hugely greater success rate than exists in open play.

So while I'm not really bothered about whether penalties are counted or not, i'll still credit the non-penalty taker as the better player if goal-count is equal.

It was a general point with not a specific striker in mind.

It's a good question though - I can't remember Suarez ever taking one for Liverpool?

he's not taken one this season (not sure about before that).

Which makes him the best Prem striker of all time from open play.

The original question posed regarding Suarez was in a seasonal context. It was "is this the best performance from a striker in the PL?" Not is this the best striker in the PL ever. It also did not reference the golden boot and whether penos should or should not be involved in that comp. Of course they should. Thats a goal scoring comp and penos are goals.

Its simply a PL season performance analysis that the question addresses and it looks to me that this could potentially be the greatest individual performance by a striker in the history of the PL (one of for sure).

And one could also add his assists and penos won on top of that.

Once you start interpreting raw data, it's all debatable. Whilst I probably agree with what you're saying it won't ring true in all cases.

If Player A and Player B have each scored 10 goals but Player A includes one penalty in his tally, you would say Player B is the better player?

Yet Player A may have scored 9 screamers yet Player B scored 10 tap ins. So is Player B really better?

Or Player A may play his football for a team in the relegation places and Player B plays for the champions. So is Player B really better?

There's too many what ifs when comparing, so each case will be different - there aren't any hard and fast rules IMO.

So for me, it goes back to my original point - a goal is a goal so all should be counted in a golden boot list regardless of whether it came off a players arse, a screamer, or a pen. But it is just a list, no more, no less.

10 goals per season players are ten a penny. There's nothing exceptional to be found with them (in comparison to other players at their level), so there's not really anything to consider.

This convo is happened around the very best goal-scorers, where a good chunk of their goals are going to be top-class (otherwise they'd not have scored so many) - and so without rating every goal of each player, an easy way to split them for their exceptional-ness would be penalties especially when one doesn't take penalties (this season, at least) as is the case with Suarez.

As I said, I wasn't thinking of him or anyone when I made the original point.

However, I think I might be implying that he hasn't the balls or the ability now. Why else has he not taken a penalty for Liverpool in 4 seasons?

cos Gerrard is the penalty taker, and he has an excellent record at them?

He gave one to Sturridge earlier this season to try and let him have a hat-trick, and Sturridge fluffed it. Gerrard got a bollocking, so I can't see him passing one on again.

Gerrard's missed fair chunks of the last 4 seasons. Who took Liverpool's pens when he was injured? Not Suarez.

No comment on the League Cup Final?

I'm not following things closely enough to know, or care.

But for me, Suarez's goals without penalties counts for more than the same number of goals with penalties. I think most people would go with that too.

-----------

Having remembered that missed Sturridge penalty, I can see Liverpool not winning the league by that single missed goal.
