You want to celebrate a lot, cos the signings probably won't get much more major than that.

Personally, I think he'd be a bit foolish to leave soton this summer. He's likely to end up warming the bench i reckon, because he's not going to be on the radar of the likes of LvG. They're going to be wanting the same experience in their players that the club wants in their manager.

I guess Chelsea would have just sent him out on loan again if he went for them. If Evra is hanging arounnd though, i can't see Shaw as anything other than on the bench for a while

Evra's out of contract this summer, I think.

I couldn't see Shaw getting a game at Chelsea, he probably would have done under Moyes at Utd, but may well end up on the bench under LvG at Utd.

Then again, it's probably not a done deal just yet and Shaw is probably weighing it all up again in light of the changed circumstances at Utd.

Yeah. Good, young attacking full back. Adventurous, two good feet. Could do damage.

England are spoiled for choice in the left back department for the World Cup.

Shaw's definitely a great prospect, but I think he might have lost his England place to Flanagan. Flanagan has pocketed some of the country's best players in the 1/2 season he's played.

And I've just remembered I've got a big branch of my family called Shaw, and they're from Hampshire/Surrey ... where's Luke from?

In fact, i've just remembered one of them is called Luke. :O

(It can't be the same geezer tho, he'd be around 30/35 ... might be part of his wider family tho).

he's from Kingston on Thames, Surrey ... I'll have to do some digging on this, there's a decent chance we might be related (if we are part of the same family, he'd be my cousin, some number of times removed).

£56,000,000 total deal for an 18 year old left back?

I thought only Citeh and Chelsea were that nuts. United really desperate.

Only person gonna fleece Utd more than the Glazers this summer are Southampton. Fair play to them.

:D

Utd are after Lallana too I think .... tho Soton have supposedly said they want a full fee plus the 25% sell-on fee they have to pay Bournemouth.

But Lallana would be stupid to go to Utd, he really would spend most of his time on the bench.

Shaw is a Rolls Royce of a footie player, so I can see why theyve spent the money. Thats that position boxed off for them for 10 years now. I just don't see the comparison to Flanagan Neil.

Shaw is an 18 year old prospect like all 18 year old prospects. Where he goes from here depends what he does. Having said that, he's a very decent player, and I'm not knocking him. Any team would want him.

I'd say performance-wise Shaw and Flanagan have been around equal, but that Flanagan has the advantage of playing for the bigger club and so has (in perception, at least) the bigger games.

And some of those games have been big pressure games, where Flanagan has looked as assured as any long-experienced player. He was man of the match against City at Eastlands, and the drop in performance was noticable when he went off.

Much like Cashley can't get a kick at Chelsea cos <can't spell his name so why try> hasn't put a foot wrong, Flanagan has continued at left back for the same reason.

I'd have to watch more Soton to decide on which was the better player but I really wouldn't be shocked if Flanagan went to Brazil and Shaw didn't (I defo can't see both of them going). Flanagan has done enough to be considered along with Shaw even if Shaw gets the shout.

As much as I love seeing Flanagan fearlessly hurl himself into tackles he is an old school leftback. Limited skill and zero pace.

Shaw is very much the modern equivalent. I've ever confidence he will prove as good a long term investment as Rio.

I'd take both to the WC but Shaw would start for me.

Comparing Shaw and Flanagan is like comparing Rio with Carra. Be interesting to see what Roy wants. I still have a feeling he may take neither of them.

I don't necessarily disagree with your comparison - they both have qualities, and the choice is made on what particular qualities you want.

And I don't much disagree with the idea that neither might go. I'm simply saying that is Shaw is going to be considered, then it's likely that Flanagan should be too (even if fairly quickly dismissed).

If I had englands best interest in heart I would play safe and pick cole and baines.

I don't think anyone would suggest those two shouldn't be first choices.

There's the suggestion that a 3rd left back might go. The obvious choice would be Shaw because he's got a cap already, but he's short on experience (as is Flanny) while Flany has a bit more of a handle on pressure and 'big games' I'd say.

If Shaw is to be considered, there's good reason why others should be too - even if the choice ends up being Shaw.
