And after announcing his departure back to the Dorset club, Burnley confirmed on their website (external) that Howe's exit was due to "personal and family reasons" but joint chairmen John Banaszkiewicz and Mike Garlick said they had not expected him to leave.

"We are surprised and disappointed that Eddie is leaving a great club like Burnley so soon in the season," a statement from the pair read.

"However, we understand that his decision reflects his personal circumstances rather than any matters at Burnley Football Club, be that supporters, the players or the board."

Agree theres no gurantees for Man Utd but they should be in a group with the likes of other teams who haven't got guarantees eg Liverpool and Arsenal.

Liverpool have guaranteed Chumps footie. Arsenal are just about there with guaranteed Chumps qualie-rounds (and they'll go thru easy enough).

Meanwhile, Man Utd are guaranteed to be sat at home watching those other teams.

Only someone who won't get a kick at another club, who is after a mega pay-day, or a mega-fan of Utd, is going to choose Utd over the likes of Liverpool. If Liverpool don't make the Chumps for the 2015/16 season then if the player is good enough they'll get another move somewhere better.

I still think a prospective signing has a decision to make it courted by champions league Liverpool and non champions league man utd because at this stage nobody knows if Liverpool making top 4 and Man Utd missing out is a one off or signs of things to come.

And yet they can guarantee themselves a year to show themselves at CL level, or they can have no guarantees of anything at all.

C'mon, no fucker is that stupid, not even footballers.

A lot of players would still pick man u over Liverpool despite the lack of cl football, but that effect diminishes every year man utd miss out.

The only players who might do so are the players who couldn't see themselves getting a game elsewhere but would at Utd, who are after a big pay-day, or who are a mega Utd fan.

There is absolutely no reason to choose the team going nowhere (for a season, at least) otherwise.
