At the start of the season LFCs goal what to get into the top four. A reasonable goal for a team who finished 7th the year previous. Mission accomplished, and some. Simple really.

To expect that team to continue the run they were on until the end of the season, or if they did not they failed is frankly laughable

Find it hilarious people skewing the narrative that LFC's season was this great fucking disaster. I thought it was an incredible year. Up until mid-March I couldnt believe what I was seeing. Each week I thought they'd be found out. They weren't and went on one of the best runs the league has known for a long time.

We didnt throw it away - City calmly and very professionally went about their business and won the league without much fuss. Very similar to Utd in 2009 where LFC finished with more points, less losses and practically the same goal diff.

The difference here was that LFC felt in a title race this year - for the first time in a generation. There was no expectation however. It wouldve been fantastic to win the league - but to do that wouldve required 13 wins from the last 14. Odds on this were astronomical.

I'm surprised that so many people are under the impression that targets don't change and fluctuate during the season. It's as if all clubs are required to put their predictions in a sealed envelope that is then kept in a vault and only opened at the end of the season and that's what they're judged on. I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that Liverpool's aims and expectations at the beginning of the season were wildly different to those with four games remaining, as they would have been for a number of teams at various points during the season. I don't know why people revert back to the "yeah but compared with what they thought at the start of the season" excuse/defense.

I'd say yes, while its a rescure mission to get back to CL football, if they still putting up similar resources to what they would if they was going for the title?

Basically I'd look at it, you have the big (top) 4/5 teams (Man City, Chelsea, Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal) who have the resources and should be chanlleging for the title every year. If they don't get the title, they have failed in the league

Then below that you have Everton/Tottenham (occasionally another team trying to wedge there own way in, based on a good season the year before) who put the resources in to get a seat at the CL table. If they don't they have failed.

Then basically every other team hopes for a good season but are only really putting the resources in to avoid relegation, so if they avoid relegation they haven't failed.

Points totals are very rarely looked at in coming years, but league positions at times throughout the seasons are.

I know its hard to accept, but I'd very much assume the club are doing it now. It gets easier as time goes on, don't worry.

I hope you and ThomThom keep this "plucky underdogs" tag up though, it's a good laugh.

You must have been somewhat absent from the rest of the world if you didn't see the amount of fluffer pieces about how Gerrard deserves a league title, virtually for being alive, from just about everyone, which LFC and its fans lapped up gladly.
