It;s the most ridiculous thing ever!!!

The whole justification for calling up Townsend and Barkley, who in my opinion deserve the call ups, well Townsend definitely, i think the lads pure class, and a lot better than lennon, even if some of his ability is a little raw now, it's certainly worth a call up and game against Moldova, it's that or risk playing someone like Milner

But the good decisions by Hodgson are undermined by recalling Sterling! Why is he even in the squad, he only just about gets in the liverpool squad, and he's poison!

This is why England will never win anything! If he played for Norwich or someone like that he'd never be near the team!

care to name a better English left sided midfielder who isn't already in the squad?

It's Sterling or Downing.

And while Downing might just shade it in pure terms, he's been consistently shite for England.

Meanwhile, while Sterling isn't the finished product - and maybe he never will be - there's an amount of sense in trying to use players who can keep being used going forwards from now.

It's the exact same reason why Townsend is in the squad. He wouldn't get a sniff using any "best at this moment" criteria.

The simple fact is there aren't many good international players that are qualified to play for England.

Any squad any of us would choose would have players in that aren't much kop. Ignoring the fact that Hodgson is earning a fortune for being England manager, I feel quite sorry for him.

P.S. Sterling is shit ;)

If Downing still played for Liverpool would you then think he should still be given a chance? :P

Nope. I was saying he shouldn't get near the England squad when he was still at M'bro, and that's never changed.

Mind you, with only Joe on the Dole for competition it's not so surprising that he did.

Players should be selected on current form rather than bench warmers at big clubs that might come good in the future...

there's a much worse England habit than that one - the bench warmers at big clubs that we all know will never come good, that get picked time after time after time.

Bit of a gamble though in World Cup year, his pushing cole strong to be a regular starter. There's no guarantees he would be able to dislodge evra, unless evra gas a move back to France lined up if the baines transfer goes through.

Townsend should not be grouped with sterling and Barclay he was very good in a crap qpr team last season, he deserves a place on league form over several games. Not convinced about sterling on the basis of his performances at Liverpool he would have got a fraction of the hype if he had put those performances in at a mid/low premiership side and wouldn't have got a call up. As others have said if you leave a fringe player out, another "not international standard" player replaces them, England probably have the weakest pool since the days sinton and palmer were getting caps.

Impression I get is barring an injury Baines would be 1st choice. From the noises coming out of Old Trafford Evra has one year left and Moyes isn't going to offer him an extension.

Don't really see it as a gamble were he to be No.2 anyway - after all, England play lots of players that have splinters from the Man Utd bench...
