WBA requesting refs allowed to view video replays before making penalty decisions.

Would a video replay have made a difference on that occasion? Not necessarily. There's enough in that challenge for plenty of refs to give a penalty some of the time.

I hope this doesn't go through, or if it does, it's through the introduction of a video ref like in Rugby. Otherwise whenever a team appeals for a penalty the ref will have to stop and look, it could even become a game-slowing tactic.

If footie ever goes for any video replays, footie will sign its own death warrant. Football is not just the game on the pitch, it's the game people watch too.

It's different for goal line (or any line) technology, because it's a 100% factual decision and easy to implement without affecting anything else of the game: did the ball cross the line or not, with the ref informed instantly if it has.

Just about every other decision in footie is a matter of opinion - was it a foul or not? The decision on that is decided by an individual's opinion of the incident.

Even a lot of offside decisions are opinion, because it's such a thin line between onside and offside. So video replays wouldn't always give a ruling that everyone could agree with, making it ultimately as flawed as what we have now.

(if technology similar to goal-line technology could be expanded to detect offside in a similar way that'd be OK because at least it would be consistent and the game could continue unless the ref gets a beep in his ear to say offside ... but to achieve that would take a massive technology infrastructure, way beyond what is currently practical)

Goal line decisions hardly ever effect the results of games. I think that the tournaments which they trialed it, they never have had to use it. I dont think its been used yet in the premiership to change a referees orignial decision. Im not sure what other leagues are using it at present.

Agree about the offside decisions. I think however technology for offsides would be incredibly disruptive, I would be amazed if it involved trracking and would more likely involve video replays. Football referees are under more pressure than any other sporting officials and would overuse technology, terrified of making a mistake.

France are in real danger in missing out on the world cup after that result. Looking at the French squad they have talented players but they aren't in the same class as the types of players France have had in the last 15 years. Also (without wanting to resort to stereotypes) the squad looks a bit lightweight and lacking in people you would want to got to battle with. Greece and Croatia should progress after those results, Portugal marginal favourties also for me.

Yes scoring against Sweden is particularly hard :P

You forget Henderson?!

What a pointless fucking game against Germany?! What's the point in having a massive friendly like that, if your going take your best players off just after half time?! Once the germans scored, it was like no one could be arsed to try and win.

I realise some of that might be down to club demands, but if international football wants to survive it needs to take some power back from the clubs quickly.

0 shots on target says it all really!

Good to see France qualify with a dodgy goal yet again.

The only good i can see from last night's match is that England have got two losses out of the way ... and going by England's strong average consistency over time that means we're likely to have a slightly better WC than we'd otherwise have.

So we might make the quarter finals this time.

But we're still too shit to win.

Didn't they have a goal incorrectly ruled out 2 minutes before though?

so I heard, yeah.

But that's not really of any relevance. The score was what it was when that offside goal was given as a goal, to put them thru.

If we're considering everything that'd happened before that goal, perhaps they'd not have even made the play-offs or (at the other end of things) they'd have already qualified.

But anyway, it was a pisstake to amuse the conspiracy theorists. :)
