2014 Headliner predictions

I think that the Stones was (my point of view obviously) a mistake this year. They should have focused on bands of the moment. For me this would have meant the Stone Roses (BIG reunion) and Daft Punk (MASSIVE single of the summer).

Having said that, I think that they should try to get Led Zep, I can see the appeal of getting the "Legends" in, but not at the expense of the "zeitgeist" (hate people who use that word...)

Not especially, but their Glastonbury set did feature a single released a mere 6 months ago, which is more of indication of current creativity than the setlists of the Stone Roses' gigs. It's disingenuous to claim that that the Stone Roses are any more 'of the moment' than the Stones.

Plenty of acts play the festival essentially trading on former glories - Chic, for example - without copping the flack that the Stones do.

I don't think it's disingenous. I'm sure there's always a buzz around the Stones, but you must have seen the excitement that has surrounded the Stone Roses gigs of the last two years.

I'm not sure it's really a competition about who has written the most songs recently - and I'm not having a go at the Stones - I just think that Daft Punk and the Stone Roses have more of a buzz about them this year. I guess my point is this - if I had the choice of two "buzzy" bands, or one lot of "legends", I'd go for the buzz.

I'll grant you that the return of the Stone Roses in 2012 was very much a hot topic, but this year I'm not so sure. Since then they've played T in the Park and V, and I think it's fair to say that their headlining slot this year at Isle of Wight passed by more or less without comment. Having been at Heaton Park and Glasgow Green I enjoyed both shows, but I think they've pretty much gone as far as they can on this bandwagon without upping the stakes with a new album.

The Stones are legends, but also generate a not insubstantial quantity of 'buzz'. Only Led Zep headlining Glastonbury would equal the amount of media interest. Particularly post-Coachella, I struggle to imagine the Stone Roses playing this year generating much more than an apathetic shrug, and I say that as a fan.

The Led Zeppelin rumour is going to be massive by the start of next year. Music fans need a will they? won't they? even if it's just peddled by the press. Besides, by then people will have realised Bowie isn't touring, Daft Punk neither, The Smiths talk is pretty much laughed off now and, well, the Oasis reunion will always be a lower scale issue until it happens. So Led Zep will be the top case again.

Sadly, it probably won't come off but hopefully Park Stage will finish later on so everyone's minds can be at ease...

I dont think the stones will ever be topped as glastonbury headliners.

It wouldnt really be pink floyd or led zep if they played now. And roger waters and page and plant have played before so that takes some of the shine off it even if they did end up playing.
