I think there's a lot of merit in not putting a bunch of stock into the Pyramid headliners - The festival succeeds because of the wealth of other stuff over the weekend, you can avoid Pyramid completely and still never be left wanting.

Having said that, I really want to be in a huge field full of people singing Enjoy the Silence, so I hope Depeche Mode is true.

Although in 2009 they turned it down saying “Glasto would be fun but the line-up didn’t quite work for us."

So would they really have signed up for next year not knowing what the rest of the bill is?

It would sell out that year but not as easily the followingyear, particularly if it rained. I dont get why people get so annoyed about big bands which appeal to the masses playing the pyramid. Its the masses which effectively subsidise all the unique quirky bits of Glastonbury such as shangri la and many of the smaller stages which arent comercially viable as single entities.

Just dont nother going if you dont want to. Go eat a fish curry instead.

Latest Paddy Power Odds (Glad Black Sabbath are up there but 'Tallica, Maiden or AC/DC for me are more likely):

Foo Fighters - 4/1 (would be very pleased to see these guys, especially after the Reading performance in 2012)

David Bowie - 8/1 (not too sure about Bowie)

Daft Punk - 8/1 (would be unmissable)

Kasabian - 8/1 (wait for a better album personally before they can headline)

Oasis - 9/1 (TBH I don't know enough material to say whether I'm a fan or not)

Elbow - 9/1 (A good band but not headline for me)

Fleetwood Mac - 12/1 (legends in their own right, very popular)

The Stone Roses - 12/1 (saw them at Heaton Park last year but I don't know whether they have what it takes still)

The Killers - 12/1 (that 2007 performance was immense, would be pretty good)

Prince - 14/1 (absolute legend, Mum plays Purple Rain like 3 times a day)

Rihanna - 20/1 (I'd actually see Rihanna, clash dependent)

Lily Allen - 20/1 (not a headliner but lower on the bill would be great)

Noel Gallagher - 20/1 (NGHFB aren't headliners for me)

Bob Dylan - 20/1 (would pull in the older festival goers vey well)

Depeche Mode - 20/1 (Other Stage headliner for me)

Black Sabbath - 33/1 (yes \m/\m/!)

I would LOVE them to play next time round, they fit the new sorta heavier direction of some acts, but I don't think it would be very likely for some reason

If you think Iron Maiden, Metallica, AC/DC, Black Sabbath are contenders for headliners next year, you're at the wrong festival and you're deluded and you need to go to download.

Sabbath have just had a number 1 album, and AC/DC have plenty of anthems that everyone knows.

AC/DC aren't really a metal band, though.

Reasons from them not playing are probably more financial than anything else, though they don't really fit with the general vibe of the place.

Glastonbury doesn't have metal headliners, it never has... why would it just change now when it has a good supply of headliners that suit it already.

Lets be fair though, It had never had a rapper as headliner until Jay Z was booked in 2008...

Plus I'd argue the 97 top of the bill with the Smashing Pumpkins followed by the Prodigy was pretty heavy for Glastonbury...But your point still stands, the likes of Metallica, Maiden, AC/DC etc have their place at Download (& to a lesser extent R&L), they don't need Glastonbury & Glastonbury doesn't need them, which is why it'll never happen. It would be nice to see a few more heavier acts scattered across the bill though.

it's a very VERY slow news day anytime any news-based publication writes a story off the back of a betting company's press release which is designed only to attract mug punters. I've gotta say that, even so, I'm amazed that something like that got thru NME's editorial process.
