Can't remember if I've asked this before, (whilst realising that this is a light hearted thread, not run by technical geeks), but why do so many American fire trucks come equipped with a large shelf at the front? Is it for winching, or a cup of tea halfway through training?

Using my expert knowledge in this area developed over the last 220 days approx, I give you this. (I did add one word) :)

This custom has become popular due to the better placement of quick connect attack lines that can be laid inside these bumpers and water piped to them for the easy deployment. the truck can be pulled up to say an accident scene or vehicle fire and the use of the quick attack line in the bumper makes things quicker to deploy and to clean up. there is no space lost on the truck and no cumbersome line deployment from the sides of the pumper. Not to mention the added benefit of having a push guard if needed and extra protection against crashes. overall, good use of a space.
