OK bad example. (But I love him for stuff like that - probably wouldn't have done if I'd forked out for a ticket).

But it's always the same. New stuff is never as popular as the classics. And if you're around for ever, your new stuff becomes the classics. (Sometimes).

Depends on what you want/are expecting to see. Last Morrissey gig I saw was nearly all new stuff. And excellent. Same for the last Dylan gig I saw. Mark Lanegan too. Robert Plant aswell. Wish he'd actually play less Zeppelin stuff. One of the reasons I'm tired of stadium sized gigs. They have to play the hits when theres that many people there.

No real interest in forking out a fortune to go see someone I've seen before a few times and getting the same greatest hits gig that they've been playing for years. Bands who just do that inspire clueless aunties everywhere to go buy you their greatest hits as a Christmas present.

The "eyeline on the front display in HMV during Christmas week" acts.

Some folk cant even get past OK Computer Russ and effectively see Radiohead as a 2 album plus 1 single band (Creep as they disregard the rest of PH)

So although Radiohead have had continue success there is a shed load of folk who think "they are not a good as they used to be"

aye you're right I suppose.

so that just leaves nick cave then!

That's why I said popular and not better. I wasn't on about us superiors, I was on about the great unwashed

Thing is, if people are open to it, its sometimes a much more rewarding, deep and meaningful gig. Moz for example. I knew we would get mostly new stuff with a few Smiths/early sole stuff littered in. A very open minded mate of mine who I was there with was expecting wall to wall Smiths and didn't know the new album but loved it.

Dylan too. People going for the first time are expecting big hair 1966 Bob to come out and play Mr Tamborine Man note perfect.

Festival crowds are different I suppose. They really have to just get up and go balls out.

Neil Young was still getting booed last year for sets dominated by unfamiliar and new material.

It helps if your new material is up to scratch. A Nick Cave set dominated by Push the Sky Away material is going to be better than one where he's spotlighting Nocturama.

how could I forget nocturama..

I remember that tour, the first song of the encore was rock of gibraltar. Depressing times.

Has anyone got a link to any of the recordings of the shows? Having seen Elbow numerous times yet never hearing them play the likes of Scattered Black and Whites and Switching Off it would be nice to have a listen.

They played Scattered Black and Whites at Jodrell Bank. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Elbow-Live-Jodrell-Panel-Digipack/dp/B00EVOZRS6 Also on Spotify

Was pretty magical:

SSK brought Elbow to the masses - but it was an excellent album to be fair. And although ODLT now gets on everybody's tits, it's not a terrible song.

The real shame was Build a Rocket Boys. That just plain stunk. And although the most recent album was an improvement, the bitter taste of BARB still lingers.

tower crane driver and some riot remain ace, most of the other songs really grate on me now

Some Riot is the standout. Starlings is good if you can ignore that fucking brass, Grounds for Divorce is a nice change of pace and Mirrorball/Weather to Fly are good albeit poor imitations of some of their earlier stuff.

I've never really been able to deal with Tower Crane Driver. Sucks the life out of me. Would rather just listen to a Taylor Swift song, twice.

I find mirrorball and particularly weather to fly unlistenable to now. Especially the start of weather to fly. It really aggravates me. An audience with the pope is awful too.

on reflection, I'd take t swift over those tracks too

"One day like this" is a victim of its own success. Seems like every tv producer feels its necessary to play it in any remotely poignant moment in a tv show.

When I first heard it I thought it would be a brilliant song to have as your first dance at a wedding, though wouldn't do it now as its so over played.

Slight tangent but I read Rocket Boys due to Elbow naming an album after it and Guy discussing it in an interview. Really loved that book, so glad I read it.

The last 3 or 4 times I've seen them (including Glastonbury last year) they haven't played a single song from pre-Seldom Seen Kid. So for this tour to include 3 or 4 from Asleep at the Back, 1 or 2 from Cast of Thousands and 1 or 2 from Leaders of the Free World is certainly a step in the right direction. Slightly disappointing there aren't more, especially given it was marketed in this way, but certainly better than nothing!

Here's my go, off the top of my head:

Any Day Now

The Birds

Ribcage

The Bones of You

Red

Lippy Kids

Fallen Angel

Leaders of the Free World

Not a Job

Powder Blue

Fugitive Motel

Mirrorball

Fly Bloy Blue / Lunette

Mexican Standoff

The Fix

Great Expectations

Newborn

----------

Station Approach

The Take Off and Landing of Everything

Grounds for Divorce

-----------

Scattered Blacks and Whites

Grace Under Pressure

Which gives 5 from Asleep at the Back, 5 from Cast of Thousands, 4 from Leaders of the Free World, 4 from The Seldom Seen Kid, 2 from Build a Rocket Boys and 2 from the Takeoff and Landing of Everything

I'm liking that list, though can they please scrap Grounds for Divorse, it is indeed by far the worst record ( Bar BARB ) that they have released and has jarred on me since i first heard it!

Actually, I'd always taken it to be a song about having bought a new curtain rail, so his curtains are now hanging by rings, rather than the fabric being direct on the rail, meaning he can now easily open his curtains really wide with great ease.

Presumably the bit about 'behaving that way' was about getting uppity over a bargain at Dunelm. Probably.
