Getting your Soundsystem/Stage at a festival

Wondering if anyone knows the following:

What do festivals look for when choosing applicants who want their stages/sound-systems at a festival

and

Do festivals pay people who bring them and put on shows?

The questions really vague, but in terms of the events of a decent size/reputation -

The first thing most places will be looking for is that they know you or at least that someone they trust is prepared to vouch for you. Making the right contacts is the best thing you can do. Obviously this is easier to do at smaller events.

In terms of payment - it varies based on event and status. But if you're just starting out, then it's really unlikely anyone would offer you any hard cash. Often tickets are offered instead of money, or the rights to sell tea/coffee/alcohol/something else from your pitch.
