Arcade Fire

Doesn't linger long in the memory, tbh.  I was there and - even if I found it patchy at the time -  I really don't remember much about it.

Like most of 2014's bill-toppers, to be fair.

I agree, I remember walking away feeling slightly underwhelmed. I mean, it was alright, but I was expecting something truly exceptional.

Their Reading 2010 set is still one of my most transformative and fondly remembered live music moments.

My friends went to see Pendulum instead. I still bring it up sometimes.

But their 2014 Glastonbury set wasn't great in comparison. I felt like LCD Soundsystem this year were everything Arcade Fire should have been in 2014.

In hindsight Reflektor was their weakest album IMO. Title track and a few songs were brilliant but a few too many songs that were interesting ideas but just didn't work.

Will be interested to see which direction they go in now though.

Disagree, the first half is a slog but the second has the best run of songs (Awful Sound through to Supersymmetry) since Funeral.

The Well and the Lighthouse -> (Antichrist Television Blues) -> Windowsill -> No Cars Go -> My Body is a Cage

Same here, only 1 of my mates came with me to AF and he left for Pendulum halfway through anyway.

Definitely my favourite ever festival set :D

Only LCD and Stones really beat Arcade Fire in my brief Glastonbury career, and even Stones might have been because it was first year and such a massive event. I imagine not having seen Arcade Fire before removes any point of comparison though so it might come off better to me, but yeah I enjoyed the shit out of it.

Having thought about it, they're not really the sort of band I can see being booked to headline twice. They're a cult band and there was previously an element of great live act finally playing the big festival but now I don't see much remaining clamour for them to headline. I mean, I don't really care about it happening again and rather new bands in similar positions were given the slot, and I suppose a lot of you think the same. Might just end up going full Springsteen in future years and play a few non-festival dates to the same fans every tour.

Really hope they start playing this regularly again. And Laika!

Pretty sure they played both when I saw them at Hyde Park (def ATB). I think there was a def element, though, that they'd played Glasto the week before so were mixing it up a bit (for people like me who were at both).

That run I posted is my favourite AF run :P

My suburbs diagnostics: Modern Man, Rococo, City with no Children can all go. Don't really care for the double header of Wasted Hours and Deep Blue. But I forgot how many bangers this record has. I love the build up to Half Light I+II as well.

Yeah I don't remember it being played in full but Laika was for sure.

Really enjoyed that gig. Including Mumford & Sons, surprisingly.

Edit: apologies, just re read and realised you were referring to the BST show.

What does that mean?

Their inclusion of current social and political themes into their music. Wiki for example considers Black Mirror as "speculative fiction with dark and sometimes satirical themes that examine modern society". I feel this is probably an appropriate way to consider AF.

First saw them back in 2013 closing Benicassim and the energy and euphoria of that gig will live with me forever.

However saw them at NOS Alive this year and it just wasn't anywhere near the same. Don't know if they have gone slightly off the boil recently, or if it was just my super high expectations from Beni.

NOS this year was my fourth time seeing them. I was at Maanchester in 2011, Blackpool and Glasto 2014 and NOS pretty much tops them all.

I think it was a combination of the people I was with, the end of an amazing holiday and hearing those songs from Funeral again for the first time in ages. I think they did Power Out -> Rebellion -> Tunnels. I cried a lot. Very special gig for me.

That's fair enough and I'm glad you enjoyed it!

To be fair I still really enjoyed them, there was just something really special about them that night at Beni for me that I don't think could be recreated if I watched them another 50 times.
