Eating Paleo

I've been eating paleo for the last 6 months now, in that time I've met one other person who does :P

He lost 3 stone in the last two months, which is mental, I'm not eating it to lost weight, more for the increased energy levels and general well being :)

I've had issues, being a pesciatarian and eating a mostly meat based diet means I've been eating a lot of fish and eggs, but this week I've realised that people shouldn't ear more than 3 tins of tuna a week due to the high mercury levels in it, so going to have to reassess what I'm eating, maybe add a few more eggs a day and go for mackerel or pollock....

Anyone else dabble in the ways of the caveman?

I'm slightly familiar with the concept, Joe Rogan interviewed Robb Wolfe (the paleo guy) on his Podcast a while ago. I love the Rogan Podcast, it might not be right up your street, but it will basically be a 3 hour 'ish chat with the guy rather than a soundbite based interview. Rogan usually entertains.

heres a link to the video podcast, skip to about 10:00 to get past the adverts, theres also an audio version available on itunes, its JRE #245

It's a bonkers fad fad that ignores both the science of the paleolithic era and the fact humans (certainly white Europeans) have evolved their diets in the last 10K years.

It has some good common-sense stuff. Veg, meat, fish, mushrooms, nuts, fruit, etc., are all good to eat. Much better for you than deep-fried Mars bars.

Cutting out refined sugar I understand. But by excluding grains, beans, dairy - for no good reason - it consigns itself into weirdo fad territory.

this is why Paleos don't eat grains

I eat Paleo cause it gives me more energy and I feel more alert, I can feel the difference when I eat something carby, I become slower and more docile

Seriously, try it for a couple weeks and see the difference it makes to your mind and body, it's like you've been set free for the first time ;)

Then most people following the diet are pretty dumb. High carb intake? Elevated insulin levels? High levels of Antinutrients? All caused only by excessive intake, not by a healthy balanced diet. Cutting grain completely is a daft idea that has more disadvantages than advantages.

Whole grains are scientifically proven to reduce risk of disease, improve insulin sensitivity, and reduce BMI. There's no credible scientific studies that support cutting out this whole food group completely.

As usual if you want to be healthy, a balanced diet combined with the right sized portions and the right amount of exercise is the way forward. Not this bunkum.

On the positive side Paleo is simple to follow and eliminates refined and over processed foods from your diet, which is a good thing.

On the negative side it is too restrictive and rules out superfoods such as whole grains as mentioned by TheGayTent above.

Oats for example are a recognized top 10 superfood and disallowed by Paleo.

Best advice is to read up more on nutrition - There are a shedload of good articles on bodybuilding.com.

Hint - It's all about the macros.

I think Paleo is a good base as it is pretty easy to follow but needs tweaking for the individual. If you are going to take the time to do that then you can design your own diet and don't need to follow Paleo.
