I don't think that many people who go to R&L would turn their nose up at Calvin Harris; I can see R&L turning to Calvin Harris sooner than they'll turn to an act like Pearl Jam

It wouldn't be worth their time. Creamfields is the same weekend and it would alienate some people and drive them towards Download Sonisphere instead. I don't see it happening it any time soon.

You do realise that, even with Creamfields being the same weekend, the majority of people at R&L would prefer someone like Calvin Harris to someone like Pearl Jam. Look at the lineup this year ffs. Hardly ayone who would go to Download/Soni will be going anywhere near R&L as it is (unless it's people who'll go to DL for bands like YMAS/ADTR); adding Calvin Harris wouldn't change that. He'd get a bigger crowd than QOTSA, and wouldn't harm sales at all.

I'm not saying I think it'll happen, as I don't, but I just wouldn't really be so surprised.

They still (regardless of what you think about Macklemore) have a purported ethos of not being mainstream though. Those saying that they'll turn to an out and out pop act eventually to headline must be oblivious to it having run for decades without having to stoop to that.

That's true, yeah, but they do still have the odd pop act (like Macklemore/Eminem/C&S). A top 9 like the following wouldn't be much more mainstream really.

The Black Keys

Two Door Cinema Club

Frank Turner

Calvin Harris

The 1975

Enter Shikari

Red Hot Chili Peppers

Deftones

All Time Low

Again, I don't actually think it will happen, and he does look out of place on that lineup I'll admit.

I know a few people (including my self) that would. I just prefer a range of acts as I can go from the Lock Up to the FR easily. R&L ain't going to do that, and with the weekend before it be stupid to change your festival to put it a bigger competition with V and Creamfeilds

Anyway Queens Of The Stone Age probably got the best response from people when they were announced. Paramore got slated by loads of people, lots of people criticizing Arctic Monkeys (still did get a postive response from most) and we all know what happened with Blink. QOTSA didn't get much of that from what I saw.

The only way I'd be happy with Calvin Harris is if the NME act is someone like Weezer or Smashing Pumpkins (or Bring Me The Horizon :ninja: ) or they decide not to close the other stages early (except Dance and 1xtra). But knowing my luck they'll book him at get someone like Bastille on the NME and close all the other stages early.

Irrelevant of what you saw from people, Arctic Monkeys and Blink will still get twice the crowd QOTSA will.

And yes, you are the kind of person who would go to Download and see bands like ADTR. I did say other than these people, as that is the kind of band that both festivals book.

R&L is competing with V and Creamfields, they are all mainstream, youth-orientated festivals. Why else did R&L introduce a 3-day Dance stage last year? To pull people away from electronic festivals.

Those three festivals are in a constant tug-of-war to be the "cool" festival of the year, the one that is the most relevant to youth culture. Sadly, Calvin Harris sells and a lot of teenagers like him, he's not an act like David Guetta who people actively hate, his blandness purveys all facets of his identity; people either like him or don't. Put him on and all the Malia-holidaying/football chanting lot will be happy, then book a band like Foo Fighters to headline another night and all the 16-year old kids who think they have a good taste in music because they share half of it with their dad will be happy too.

These are all generalisations and not necessarily true. People go to R+L expecting a rock festival. If they're happier going to see Calvin Harris then they'd probably go to festivals where he's playing. R+L isn't going to adapt when this crowd are buying tickets regardless.

Of course he does. C+S and Eminem had both performed at the festival before last year and have some crossover credibility. C+S subbed Download and Eminem was booked in 2000 and 2001 in the days that people laud the lineups. Calvin Harris is in a different league to all of those acts in terms of being a mainstream pop artist and R+L bookers would never touch him with a bargepole.

True, but there is still a demand for act like QOTSA from Leeds and is those people see someone like Calvin Harris on the line up they're going to be turned away. If they're going to get a dance act to headline it will be The Prodigy,

Anyway you're going disregard people like me who would go to both Download and R&L that is a large propitiation of people. There is only one band I'd see on the Friday that I want to see and isn't playing R&L. However that does more less prove your point as the acts I'd see at Download (and Soni) are all acts that could play R&L still.

Yeah but they (hopefully) wont sell out to directly compete with those festivals by sharing a bigger group of acts than before. Most people would have made their mind up about the festival they're going to next year. A lot of people I know are complaining about R&L not having enough dance (someone I knew said it would be ever with David Getta and a few people I hate agreed and the same person said that the dance acts terrible) and so they thinking about going to Creamfields next year instead of Leeds.

Not all youths like the same music. Most of my mates (16 and 17) don't like Calvin Harris evem Paramore are more popular. People who like the music R&L offer (Indie Rock, Alternative etc..) go to R&L. If they want Dance they're going to go to Creamfield and if they want something more poppy they go to V. Some go to the festival that is closest but after their first one they go where they prefer.

EDIT: To be honest I'm just procrastinating

My dad likes Meat Loaf, Elton John and Billy Joel, thinks he's cool cause he saw Muse, thinks Depeche Mode are the worst band of all time and have no fans, and tells me on a constant basis that Nine Inch Nails "won't get anywhere with a name like that". Also when SOAD got announced he said "Well who's gonna remember these in five years?".

I think sharing taste with my dad would make me cry.

I'm not disregarding people like you, I'm saying the amount of people they'd lose to DL/Soni probably wouldn't be that great in comparison to the amount of other people they could draw in.

What about the typical teenagers who like Arctic Monkeys, Foals, The Vaccines, Bastille, The 1975, Kendrick Lamar, Rudimental, Disclosure, Calvin Harris, etc.? There's a shitload of those. The majority of people I know going to R&L would see Calvin Harris. Yeah you get a few teenage Swim Deep fans with their shit hair and tie dye t-shirts who think they know shit about music who will complain, but they can go watch Peace in the FR tent.

I'm also procrastinating. I spent the entirety of yesterday watching football, then celebrating alone, then watching football, then being sad, then playing FIFA until I went to bed. Today I went on an hour long drive into town for no reason whatsoever just so I didn't have to revise. I'm fucked I don't care I'll spend my life discussing festivals instead.

Half of my dad's music taste is awesome (Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and Joy Divison etc) and the other half is.....ermmm....questionable....

yeah you can't really qualify that as a distinct group of people, and you're going hella conjecture here

Still some of those acts listed would have been booked even if it was a few years ago and they still hold to what R&L offer (not all though) and they go to R&L as the know they get most of those acts.

Well I have an exam tomorrow that at least I'm prepared for (I can do it twice in the allocated time  ) and a Physics exam tomorrow where it appears the mark scheme doesn't even know what is going on and it contradicts others. Then there is History which I'm not prepared for. I would close down my laptop but I Appear Missing came on shuffle on my R&L playlist so I ain't closing that down just yet (unless something crap comes on). EDIT: Royal Blood just came on so I'm going to have to wait a little longer
