Just pulling your leg.

Beyonce was OK for the first 20 minutes but then it went a bit power-ballady and I sauntered off elsewhere. If she'd just played pop belters and maybe not shot the bolt early doors by opening with her best tracks then I'd have probably stayed and had a pretty damn good time.

But she still deserved a stab and most people seem to agree she made a pretty decent fist of it.

i'm all for hip-hop artists headlining, but the problem is that apart from Jay Z, who is there? Eminem who will never headline Glastonbury, and Kanye West who should headline Glastonbury. that's about it as far as headliner-sized hip hop acts go

same for pop acts. Beyonce was just 'hip' and huge enough to pull off headlining without pissing off too many of the regulars (and she writes her own songs and can actually sing / dance which is a bonus). then you've got your Madonna and your Lady Gaga and that's pretty much it for that ilk of act (and from the road Lady Gaga seems to be going down she'll be out of public demand come a few albums)

* i'm probably forgetting a shitload of both huge hip hop artists and female pop singers who could headline but fuck it, point still somewhat stands

I'm glad whoever mentioned Idler's Dream did...says it all really for those banging on about how Oasis never pushed the boundaries with their utter shite, lad rock, same old shouty awful music that all sounds the same...you clearly have only listened to one album at most. Idler's Dream is the most beautiful song I have ever heard, full stop....I would recommend listening to a bit a wider range of the music you're so determined to hate before you shred it pieces.

I think my favourite comment of the many narrow minded, bitter sounding and judgemental so far is how Noel is "a thick twat." Judging someone you've never met probably makes you a thicker twat, ironically.

Some of you really need to get down off your high horses and LISTEN to the music you're trying so hard to rip apart....or is not "cultured" enough for you?

Well - exactly. In theory, any act of any genre should be able to headline if they have the talent and profile. What's missing is the specific examples. Would be great to have, say, a reggae headliner, but I'm not sure if there are any current acts that would really qualify in this day and age.

Edit: In response to FloorFiller

is that true though? the festival has been pretty much exclusively headlined by "white boys with guitars" since forever.

pop acts havent had a look in until jay z headlined. (aside from the kylie debacle)

the likes of take that in the 90s got nowhere near headlining the festival

David Bowie is far above them in every category you mentioned. As are the Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zep, The Who, Queen & Elton John.

You need to get some perspective. Oasis were big in the 90's, but they weren't the biggest thing since the Beatles that was a lot of hype & a good sales pitch, nothing more.

I'd take Jay-Z & Beyonce's performances over the crock of shit Oasis delivered in 2004. Awful set.

pop music has become a far more 'acceptable' form of music these days though. back then, it was frowned upon and just for the screaming masses of girls, and whilst that's still true to some extent, i have no qualms with admitting i love a good pop song and a lot of others i'm sure feel the same (which back in the 90's i'm sure was far less so because it was all lads lads lads, football football football)

With respect, i don't need any perspective to back up my particular point. Your claim that Bowie is far above them in every category is simply incorrect and not up for debate. During Oasis' purple patch they took the record for fastest selling debut album of all time, Morning Glory became the highest selling studio album since Sgt Pepper, Knebworth was the fastest selling concert of all time with unprecedented demand, they had the most singles in the top 100 since The Beatles. Oh, and they also entered the Guinness book of records for longest run of top ten hits by a group and had more weeks in the top 75 album/singles charts from 1995-2005 than any other artist. So no, it wasn't hype and a good sales pitch. It was fact.

Crikey, just remembered they have the fastest selling album of all time with Be Here Now, selling 696,000 in its first week. It wasn't even released till a thursday! No need for jokes about the album, just stating a fact.
