I got into them through Boxer, then discovered High Violet and then Alligator. So the theory doesn't hold for me. I keep swinging between Alligator and High Violet as my favourite but mine goes:

High Violet = Alligator > Boxer > Trouble Will Find Me > Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers > The National

I'm still torn between the two really, but HV has got a lot of listens of late. All four later albums are superb however and largely depend on one's mood.

Still not bought the Journal either...

How can this be the case? I like The National a lot but one thing you can levy criticism their way for is their lack of variety.

For the record Alligator is their only perfect record and Karen is their best song

I don't think there's a lack of variety at all but I listen to them somewhat obsessively. I think each album is vastly different. Alligator, Boxer, High Violet and TWFM are all miles apart.

I adore Alligator but Abel, All The Wine and Mr November are all better than Karen

I think there is a level at which listening to a band too much tips you over into craziness. It's a beautiful place to be though... Come over to the dark side. We have wine and three-piece suits and capos.

Boxer > High Violet > TWFM > Alligator > Sad Songs > Self Titled.

The top 4 regularly change though. Alligator would probably be higher if I'd seen more of it live

I know this sounds like heresy, but at the time it was released I thought Boxer was poor and a big disappointment! Obviously, I came to my senses after a few months! High Violet went the other way- I convinced myself I liked it straight away, but I hardly listen to it these days- something about it that just does't click with me. I liked Trouble Will Find Me, but they were on another level with Alligator and Boxer, everything seems to be not as good. Except Cherry Tree, which is definitely worth listening to/buying if you get the chance.

Also is S/T worth getting? Sounded pretty unremarkable when I listened on spotify, and a bit country for my liking.

For the record, I'm crazy enough to like the self-titled too. I wouldn't listen to it all the time or anything but it has some good songs and I like to track their development. I got this band bad.

i've only worked backwards to alligator so far and although i only found them when they released twfm, boxer is my fav. i couldn't possibly rank the rest though.

oh and karen rocks. i nearly burst myself laughing the first time i listened (xmas eve on a train, alligator was my xmas treat to myself) and had to skip back cos "did he really just say...?"

confession: i'm not arsed about abel much.
