Is Rock in Rio in Lisbon next year then? That's interesting - have they announced who's playing yet? Can't comment on the atmosphere because I've never been, but, regarding tickets, you could try somewhere like ticketline.pt

Hmm, okay, just googled it - Justin Timberlake and Arcade Fire - sadly, not for us then. Now, if it had been Springsteen, like in Brazil ......

I went to this in 2008 and 2010. It's not a festival as such, just a bunch of one day shows. I got tickets from ticketing.pt back then. I think there's a presale with a local supermarket at present and then tickets will go on general sale.

The venue is huge, about 100,000 a day go. Atmosphere is good, big bands rarely go to Portugal so the fans are amped to see them. Good value at €60 a ticket.

Would I be right in thinking that you've talking mainly about Brazil there? Was seriously considering going the year SOAD played - until I discovered the cost of the flights! :D I can't help noticing that the line ups are nowhere near as impressive in Portugal/Spain - more like a selection of Brazil undercard. Though, that may well reflect a lack of artists touring in that part of Europe, and, of course, if you did happen to like those playing, you would be stoaked!

I'm talking about both Brazilian and Portuguese. They're both pretty much the same. The only significant difference that I can think of is the price (Brazil's is almost the double) and the venue. In Portugal is a lot better, it's in a public park, bigger and prettier with a kind of oval shaped theatre that allows you a great view to the stage.

I think all the editions have impressive line ups but It all depends on the bands on tour and your personal taste.

Here's some of the names from all the Portuguese editions:

2004:
Paul McCartney
Peter Gabriel
Foo Fighters
Kings of Leon
Metallica
Slipknot
Britney Spears
Black Eyed Peas
Sting
Alicia Keys
Incubus
(...)
2006:
Guns n' Roses
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Roger Waters
Santana
Kasabian
Sting
Shakira
Jamiroquai
(...)
2008:
Muse
Bon Jovi
Alanis Morissette
Amy Winehouse
Lenny Kravitz
Rod Stewart
Joss Stone
Metallica
Machine Head
Linkin Park
(...)
2010:
Muse
Rammstein
Elton John
Motörhead
Megadeth
Snow Patrol
John Mayer
Shakira
Miley Cyrus
2012:
Bruce Springsteen
Metallica
Stevie Wonder
Bryan Adams
Smashing Pumkins
Linkin Park
Lenny Kravitz
Joss Stone
Kaise Chiefs
(...)

The line ups always repeat some of the bands from one country to another. Apart from Iron Maiden and Justin Timberlake, pretty much all the bands that played this year's in Brazil have been to the one in Lisbon. Justin Timberlake has been already confirmed for Lisbon next year and Iron Maiden have confirmed they'll be on tour in Europe around the same time. I think it's fair to expect them as well.

Here's a video from Springsteen in Lisbon last year that give you good picture:

I've never been to the one in Madrid but I assume it's also the same.

By the way, Rock In Rio only happens every two years in each country and I've heard that it could happen is Las Vegas as well in 2 years.

I know a guy that went to the Jamiroqui one in Madrid. Wouldn't be my thing, but sounds like he had a brilliant time.
