Just finished reading Catcher in the Rye. Incredibly disappointing, maybe I'm a bit too old for it to resonate with me, but I found it very beige.

If that book was a person it would be the white, beta-male guy in the English Lit seminar who wears expensively cheap-looking vintage clothes and thinks every point he makes is oh-so-deep and oh-so-original.

(Drawing a lot from my own experiences there, I'll admit)

I bought Go Set a Watchman a couple of weeks ago but have not started it yet. It's the prequel to To Kill a Mockingbird which is in my top 10 favourites and I don't want to be disappointed

I haven't read it yet, but I think the general consensus seems to be that it should be treated less as a prequel and more as a draft treatment for some of the idea that later developed into To Kill a Mockingbird.

I'm not totally against the idea of it being published, I don't think works by an author that are part of the creative process rather than finished results detract from the final work, although I know that in this case a lot of the controversy was more over the extent of Harper Lee's knowledge and consent of the publication.

I've become depressed at how almost ubiquitously awful the vast majority of modern sci-fi is, writing and content, including a lot of writers who are reasonably well received and reviewed.

So I've started a series that I've been holding-off from reading because I knew it was an ace in the sleeve: just started the Culture wars with Consider Phlebas by Iain M Banks. Already, a few pages into the first book of a series, it's better than most sci-fi authors manage in a lifetime.

PS, on a related note "please, stop writing NOW, Peter F Hamilton. You're a not-even-a-hack".
