Just part of the ritual, really. The idea of it is that they come back because the crowd are chanting for more, but really it's just become expected.

I've only ever seen a band do an encore for real once (Muse at the WWZ Horse guards parade show) and because of that it was the 2nd best time I've ever seen them (second only to OOS in 2011)

I don't think it's really the festival who say this - it's all the band. Pearl jam do 2/3 encores whenever they play - even at festivals. So it's totally up to the band how they perform their set tbh.

The only time I'd wish for an encore would be when a band finishes. I would rather the band just carried on playing than do one encore, never mind four.

I don't think I could genuinely play the drums for longer than say 60/70 minutes without a short break though. I don't know what it's like for guitarists as I'm not the best at guitar but I feel I can speak for most drummers that we couldn't do it
