10 years ago we hadn't won at Anfield for 41 years.

Today we haven't won at Anfield for 51 years.

Past performance is sometimes a very reliable indicator of future performance.

We keep playing like a shower of no marks and you'll get yer chance later this season.

Liverpool fans getting pessimistic should pay more attention to what's going on elsewhere. Virtually all the clubs around them have regressed, and only Arsenal have improved on last season. Whether the rest have declined as much as Liverpool remains to be season, but while Man U are stronger up front than last season, they're defensively and psychologically far more vulnerable; Everton are starting to look like they have a Martinez defense rather than a Moyes one, and a couple of key players are having age taking their toll (Distin, Barry); Spurs... are just being Spurs.

Liverpool could finish anywhere between 3rd-7th, and most likely 4th or 5th.

On their play to date, that looks mightily unlikely.

Last season, Man Utd fans spent the first 6 months hoping things would pick up, but they didn't. It could be the same at Liverpool this season.

I don't think that's how it's going to go, but who knows really? I think they'll pick things up a bit, but whether it's enough to get them in the running for a top spot I'm far less certain. Suarez is a big big loss, and the current squad just don't seem to be gelling.

I know what you mean but Everton and United have arguably started worse whilst Spurs haven't set the world alight. Too early to call as any of the sides are capable of going on a run when everybody is fit and firing.

Its also a post world cup season and teams generally take a little longer to get going. As long as they don't lose track of other contenders (which I cant see happening) I think it will be a close race.

LFC have been awful. Nae hope of top 4.

Don't give up just yet. There is plenty of awful around them with the same potential of getting 4th and even though some believe Arsenal to have improved, this time last year they looked much better IMO and I really don't think they are that great yet this year. All to play for. Still early doors. Obviously a marked improvement is needed. I will hold my breath until Christmas or another month or 2 at least

I agree with that. And it's also worth noting that Liverpool didn't look particularly interesting this early on, too.

I was choosing to watch Arsenal games instead of Liverpool games, right up until Suarez had his day out against Norwich yet again (which was early December) - when i kicked myself for not watching that match.

I think from memory liverpool were pretty much level pegging with Man Utd over the first 19 games, you dont win anything int he first half of the season, but you can defintiely throw it away.

Nah ... Liverpool were doing much better. As far as I recall they were in the top 4 all the time until Boxing Day or the match after that (they were top on xmas day, i think).

Utd didn't get a sniff of being that high up at any point of the season.

Liverpool cetrainly were playing much better but it wasnt reflected in the points. After 19 games (halfway mark) Liverpool were 2 points ahead of man utd. It was the second half of the season when Liverpool pulled away.

yeah, but that exact half-way point was Liverpool's lowest position of the season. If you went back two weeks prior to that, there will have been a bigger gap.

If you remember, the last 2 games of the first half of the season for Liverpool were against City and then Chelsea (or was it the other way around?), and they lost both of those - which dropped them outside of the top 4 for the only time in the season.

There was a bigger gap previously, but you could argue that the reason for that gap was because man utd had already played those 2 teams and liverpool had not! After 19 games every club has played every club, although of course there are varinaces depending on the types of home and away games you have had.

I htink my main point is that as long as liverpool set the foundations and are close enough at halfway, they will give them a chance.

yep, true - tho Liverpool had gone much better than most people thought they would.

I'd said not long into the season that I could see Liverpool staying in the top 4 until mid-December, because of how the fixtures fell quite nicely for them, and just about everyone who posts in this thread said that just wouldn't happen. But it did.

Meanwhile, it was obvious that Utd had lost something that they'd had previously, tho the blinkered reds kept in denial with that until February or later.

What kicked Liverpool on so strongly was Sterling. I don't think he started a game until December, and when he did make the occasional appearance prior to that he wasn't so effective. And then suddenly, whoosh!

I htink my main point is that as long as liverpool set the foundations and are close enough at halfway, they will give them a chance.

Perhaps, tho when other 'top' teams have started as slowly as Liverpool have done this season (Arsenal have done this a few times recently) it's taken a long time to re-close the gap.

The difference is that the skill in the Arsenal side could always be seen, but i'm not seeing much in Liverpool right now. The best comparison to make, I think, is Utd last season - potential, but little to show that it's going to start shining thru.

Liverpool certainly need to rest sterling, if they don't he is more than likely to go down with a muscle injury and be out for a while.

Still can't understand him playing in the league cup last week.

You would imagine Liverpool's hopes of a top 4 place is down to sterling and sturridge playing the majority of games.
