That is a good question. I think everyone has different thoughts on this.

Basement Jaxx, Jay Z, Stereophonics, The Levellers, Shunk Anansie -I wouldn't picked any of these as headliners and yet they have all headlined the festival in the past.

I dunno, I think almost all of those make more sense than someone like beyonce.

basement jaxx was a last minute panic, jay z was the festival being daring, stereophonics were pretty huge at the time (and shite), the levellers were absolutely a glastonbury band back then. Skunk anansie.....errr they did that one good song that one time....

rod stewart is more baffling imo

holy shit this is an unbelievable revelation.

I never had you down as a toffee-nosed, young boy fagger

I think people were ridiculing the thought of blur playing before noel. They headline every festival they play these days, so they thought of them subbing is absurd.

There is a shortage of acts perceived to be "headliner sized" as it is, so blur certainly wont get relegated.

Radiohead dont sell as many records as noel gallagher, but they also would headline as they have cemented their reputation over the years.

I can understand that mate and I appreciate that Noel is a bit of a peculiar one. I was just at a loss though as what would deemed a headliner. I have seen both sides of the coin on this forum, Depeche Mode are not big enough but Noel being big does not make him a headliner.

At the end of the day we are all on here due to a love of music and festivals. It is nice to have reasoned debate and I have managed to give a lot of new stuff I knew nothing about a listen due to people on this forum. It would be nice though if people are going to call someone ridiculous then they actually explain why rather than just expecting their viewpoint to be more valid than the rest of ours.

In respect to the the Sunday headliner, I am hoping one of Shaun Ryders incarnations will be headlining one of the smaller stages so I will not be bothered who headlines the pyramid anyway.

I quite like Lilly Allen though. No idea why she seems to be a guilty pleasure.

Without dragging the thread into the Noel/ Oasis V Blur talk we had yesterday, could someone define the criteria for what makes a Glastonbury headliner?

I was told to stop being ridiculous for suggesting that Noel should headline above Blur. When I stated well Noel at present (and pretty much always has been for that matter) is more popular than Blur, I was told popularity is not a marker for what makes a Glasto headliner. But a while a go when we were talking about Depeche Mode, I was told they were not big enough (which again is silly considering they are the biggest electronic band the world has seen)

So it is fair to say at present I am a bit stumped at what constitutes a Glasto headliner.

Don't know what "the criteria" are per se but for me personally I'd say Noel could headline Glastonbury at the minute but if it was a toss up between him and Blur, he'd be subbing. Blur have a bigger catalogue than solo Noel, two successful headline slots including one of the all time greats, Damon has appeared with plenty of other acts as well.

If the top two was Noel and Taylor Swift or Noel and ELO I'd back him as a headliner.

Michael said the announcement would be a "big one". I don't think Blur fit that description by themselves.

Micheal is always going to say that. What else would he say?

That said, there's something in what's been said this week that makes me wonder if it is Noel subbing Blur. Good tabloid fodder that.

there is a lot of (ir)rational hatred for noel and all things oasis on here, so people immediately go on the attack at the mere mention of them (I am as guilty of this as anyone).

It is weird though, but I think certain bands do just feel like "glastonbury bands", eg blur, radiohead and some just dont, eg depeche mode.

I dont know why really, but I presume it's because a lot of people still associate glastonbury with the glory days of the 90s

I wouldn't pay too much attention to words like that from a promoter. After all, they'll never be saying "it's a shit one".

Hahaha yep, good call. Still, could you imagine ME saying that about Blur and really meaning it?

I think the "swift is good" claims were put to bed as soon as people started linking youtube clips.

Lowest common denominator pop shite. Just awful.

For chart pop music I think her new album is pretty great but the high acclaim she gets from respectable music fans is a bit baffling as her lyrics are a bit cheesy. Saying that she seems to be heading in a more indie direction so may eventually be seen as a "credible" artist in a few years.

Noel or Jeff/ELO for Sub?

Noel because he has the calling festival to sell before announcing?

ELO because they've got a tour to announce?

Having said that, my gut says that announcing dates for an ELO tour would probably happen many months in advance to give it a chance to sell. Unless it's glasto appearance and then tour later on in the year.

....clutching at straws. ELO would be super boss!
