I did not want to turn the talk into specific bands mate. I am more interested in what people think the criteria is for a band being a headliner.

It is a tough one... My favourite band, Def Leppard (could you have guessed?), have never been (and would never be) considered a Glasto headliner even though they are arguably bigger than loads of headliners through the years. This isn't me claiming that they should headline by the way, they are past their prime now and I wouldn't expect it at all. Just an example of how record sales aren't the sole consideration.

really? Glastonbury would be holding off announcing a sub because of Latitude ticket sales? for an act that isn't exclusive?

how have Latitude managed to announce him ages ago with Calling still to sell?

alt-J are headlining Latitude and they've been announced for Glastonbury...

It all depends on what contractual agreements any band has made.

Promoters pay hundreds of thousands of pounds - perhaps millions - to book a headliner band, where they expect that headline band to drive most of the ticket sales.

If that band has other advertised shows elsewhere, that band will sell them less tickets and so is worth a lower fee.

Just because you don't grasp how it works doe3sn;'t get to mean your take on things ids the right one.

Didn't that seem to be part of the thinking yesterday? Melvin Benn is particularly demanding and doesn't like his top acts being announced, Alt J were all but confirmed anyway so wouldn't have had a big impact, but people might not buy latitude tickets if they new Noel was playing G, he's definitely big enough for that to be considered I think

if Benn was that adamant then he wouldn't have been announced for TITP.

Latitude doesn't have him on an exclusive, so they're not really in a position to dictate where/when he's announced.

Glastonbury may have to hold off announcing any act because of that acts contract with another festival if that's what is in the contract. Whether Alt-J have been announced or not is irrelevant to what contract Noel Gallagher has with Latitude and/or Calling.

Correct he isn't an exclusive, but you don't know if there's anything contractually that says he couldn't be announced

Titp will have an extremely minimal effect of Latitude ticket sales, I would go as far as saying it has next to no effect on their ticket sales, but glastonbury definitely does, so he may have different rules for different festivals and may have paid out for some rights

Benn may not be bothered about TITP because its in Scotland. Reading/Leeds have shared headliners with TITP before and just billed them as 'English exclusive'.

Again, whether Latitude have him billed as an exclusive or not is irrelevant. Without knowing what is in the contract with Latitude (e.g. Noel G can be announced for Calling and TITP but nothing else) you can't categorically state that they're 'not really in a position to dictate when he's announced'

t in the park is owned by the same company that owns latitude & R/L - so there's a big chance both bookings were on the same contract.

There's a long history of Melvin's fests sharing their top acts with T. There's no similar history of them sharing their acts with English festivals.

I have mentioned before that I also find Noels stuff very MOR and a bit bland these days. But I have enjoyed him live. The thing I find a bit sad is that people are quick to call someone ridiculous but give no reasoning for their claim. If someone is going to ridicule me views then it would be kind of nice if they were to validate their claim rather than say I am being ridiculous because of what I have said does not fit with their particular taste in music.

Noel hasn't earnt the right to headline as a solo artist. Blur have.

If Noel was headlining it would be because he was in oasis. Not because of his solo music.

There's also a bit of...we can't get oasis, so we are copping out and we'l give u Noel

Talking about exclusives, and delaying announcements. Glastonbury is the only festival watched by millions on national TV, makes quite a big difference compared to playing any other festival with limited/non-existent TV coverage.

As sad as it is there are plenty of people who see this as a legitimate alternative to actually going to a gig, and can have a significant impact on ticket sales for tours etc.

I know it's hard to keep up as this thread moves along very quickly, but do people even give the posts they've missed a cursory glance before asking the same bloody questions that have been posted 15 times in the last day?

Why, why, why, why?????? Read the bloody posts on the last page and you'd know why!

Sorry. Going for a coffee and a lie down.

Agree with all of this, tho on the plus side at least if for some reason Noel headlined this year it should mean Oasis aren't booked for a few more years.

Can someone please tell me the quote that Noel gave regarding the picture of Liam with the backstage pass at the HFB gig. It was something about him getting it off someone else. I can't find it.

This is one of those threads where if you don't look at it regularly you have the choice of catching up or skipping to the end, I don't blame people for not wanting to read 40 pages of the hogwash we spout just to get to the end and find out fuck all has changed, but couchy is in Thailand, Matt42 is on hiatus and sometimes mummy and daddy fight.
