russycarps
everything about the verve pointed to them being crap beforehand, but on the night it was brilliant. They really nailed it. incomparable to oasis in 2004. Edited November 26, 2014 by russycarps
ItsBadForYa
I think I'll make a New Year's resolution to never read anything from NME. What a non-story. 'An undisclosed source', in other words some bloke who did some building work for the next door neighbour of the cousin of the guy who used to be in charge of an unofficial fan site. If either the band or the Glastonbury team say something directly to the journalist, fair enough, but an undisclosed source? We may as well listen to Mike99! The NME will cream themselves over anything remotely connected to The Libertines and it's all rather embarrassing. Like a spouse refusing to sign divorce papers even though the universe knows it's over, the NME have been in a decade-long state of denial about the relevance of their favouritest, bestest band ever. LondonTom
the verve were brilliant! They obliterated the terrible memories of jay-z the night before. I wasn't there, but watching the Verve on TV was what made me want to go to Glastonbury! There just seemed to be something about it that looked amazing and I am not sure why as I don't even really like that much!

Definitely my biggest "pleasant surprise" I've had watching a headliner. He was a great front man and really got into it. Like you, I was no real fan of them and havent ever listened to them since I dont think! (actually I do have the bootleg of that gig which I played a couple of times). And they had the difficult task of following leonard cohen, who had just put on one of the best ever sets. That was a wonderful end to the festival, after the utter shambles of the garbage served up saturday night.

FloorFiller
Not a day goes by where you don't moan about Jay Z, it is quite extraordinary. i think Jay Z has had a bigger lasting effect on russy than any of the acts he's enjoyed at the festival. job well done, Jay Z
Vanderlyle
Jay Z was pretty bad though. So there's some sense to what he's saying. Lots of people looking confused as to what they were listening to. Lots of others who were inwardly confused but masking it by making 'W' shapes with their hands and pretending to mouth the lyrics. Big Vern
A perfect synthesis of the hamfisted ladrock of The Oasis and the weepy emo mithering of The Coldplays. (and I say this as someone who saw them plenty of times in small venues in the run up to the release of A Storm in Heaven. Even supporting The Black Crowes one evening, for some reason) My wife asked me if i could play Wonderwall on my guitar. I said "maybe". I had zero intention of seeing him. I was going to see massive attack that night but I allowed myself to get taken over and controlled by the hype. Right up to the first note of the first song I was at fever pitch with anticipation. And then the first "song" started and I was frozen to the spot, apoplectic with rage at what I was witnessing. I'll never forget that night, nor forgive it.

What are the reasons for the Beeb boycott?
Amy Lawn
Wasn't particularly arsed, was at a loose end really and went and saw them and really enjoyed it. What are the reasons for the Beeb boycott? As I understand it, it wasn't so much a boycott as auntie saying they'd have to leave certain aspects out of the show for it to be something they'd broadcast, MA said no. Space Shanty
Wasn't particularly arsed, was at a loose end really and went and saw them and really enjoyed it. What are the reasons for the Beeb boycott? As far as I'm aware, although I'm taking this from my mate, it was due to the BBC's biased coverage of the conflict in Gaza. There were quite a few messages on the backdrops during the set that would indicate this is the case.

Mardy
woah, bit of history rewriting going on here. The Verve were fucking terrible, I caught about 15 seconds of it, 'Lucky Man'. Unlucky 50,000 punters in the Pyramid field, more like.
Mardy
Even you should be able to spot the problem with your statement there mate. You're right, I know, but I can still feel a little bit sorry for them.
Mardy
ah, maybe, yeah, but the intro to the song was so arseclenchingly bad, I had to get out, sharpish.
Mardy
Oh is that tonight? Right, Scruffs, what do you reckon, shall I go and see Swans on Saturday? Pros:I quite like one or two of their songs and it would get me out the house on a Saturday night Cons: Can't really afford it and it would get me out the house on a Saturday night. A friend is going but I don't know any of their songs so didn't bother.
