I know I don't really know anything about mainstream poppy stuff, but is Flo genuinely at the sort of level to headline Glastonbury? Latitude...well, yes I guess. But putting her alongside some of the other names mentioned for next year, is she there? I mean, Elton John. ELTON JOHN! AC/DC. Fleetwood Mac (even though they're not, obviously). I could understand her subbing or headlining Other, but the Pyramid?

Well, what do I know? Chances are I likely won't watch any of the PS headliners, so I know nothing. Mind you, half an hour of AC/DC...hmmm

Ben

Im going off the Eavis interviews. Emily - "catch them at right time" and Michael's "unexpected".

I'm not a fan and would be somewhere else, I can just see it happening

AC/DC are the youngest of those acts and they've sold the 600-700m records between them so of course she's not on the same level but I don't think that means she can't headline Glastonbury. Where venues are concerned she's been bigger than some recent headliners and her festival record (including Latitude where she headlined on her debut) speaks for itself. I don't see any reason she can't, unless the next album is a commercial blunder, but with how big she was when she was last around then I can't see how that will happen.

Flo & The Machine have only done 2 albums havent they? That's a long set to fill and keep the crowd entertained with only 2 albums to call upon that people know.

Can't see the Pyramid Field being any more than half full tbh

If she's/they're doing headline shows then an hour and a half shouldn't be a problem. It should be three albums by then which is the same as famous first headline slots from Oasis and Radiohead and more than Coldplay or Mumfords. It'll be difficult to gauge popularity until there's more hype about the album but I don't think she'll/they'll struggle.

I thought Mumford only had two albums.

Yeah the album hasn't really added anything, just sustained their popularity.

I think next summer they'll play some pretty big slots (sub other, sub Latitude, 3rd/4th/headline NME Reading) but can't see them ever moving much past that unless they manage to make album 2 a bit different & interesting. Unless they do that I imagine people will be starting to get bored by the end of next summer as they are rather samey, as good as they are.

Really? They had a massive ascent before the album but not since. IMO.

Huge hype before the album, seems to have fizzled out a bit whereas the Artic Monkeys were being played in every club & houseparty I went to for ages after it came out.

What can you expect? Directly before the album was the summer where they packed out every festival tent they played. They very quickly sold out one tour and one bigger tour since and are working on Europe/America but those don't have the coverage of festivals so if you're not at the gigs then you probably won't be whipped up in the hype right now.

Royal Blood don't have the big hit singles that those other fast-tracked headliners had though. not that high charting singles are necessary, but i think they'd struggle to get keep a headliner crowd without them (although album number two might well provide one or two)

Good point but singles charts are way different now to when a lot of the rising rock bands came up.

Latitude?

A few got bored after the first couple of songs - myself included in that - but many obviously haven't so I could see their hype rolling along until at least album two is toured. After that they could just plummet like Razorlight.

But they have had significantly less radio play than say the Arctic Monkey started.

Plus they packed out small venues/tents, just as AM did.

Edit: great band, glad I saw them at Glastonbury

Royal Blood are an interesting one - great album, have been great live so far, but it remains to be seen whether or not they will be another band who are overly hyped by NME, Radio 1, etc, who often delight in retracting their backing at a later date. Personally, I think they've got a lot of promise, but must say they are a bit of a copy of Death From Above 1979, who came out with their 2nd album, which was better, and showed them exactly how to do it (not criticising Royal Blood btw - love them, but think DFA1979 are a superior act of a similar ilk).

BTW love the obsession a lot of people have with Florence and the Machine on these boards!

Hottest new band since the Arctic Monkeys was more my claim. It'll be a while until a rock band has overnight success quite like them.

I agree with Will. They don't sound anything like or try to sound anything like one another - they just play the same instruments.

I probably wouldn't even go see Florence and the Machine but they've worked hard and it'd be nice to see a new female fronted headliner that've worked their way up bills and venues. Any new headliner seems to need arguing around here.
