I've got to disagree with that. I didn't see Lana Del Ray, but I've heard very mixed reviews. This comment, however, made me think of Primal Scream last year. I'd had tickets to see them on tour the previous year but had to miss it through illness, so I was chuffed when they were announced for Glasto. When they came on, though, Bobby Gillespie was clearly convinced that everyone in the Pyramid field was only there waiting for the Stones. In my opinion what a proper performer, who cared about the audience (even if only a small number are really interested), should have done in that situation is put on a good show, with the attitude of 'even if you all want to see the Stones, let's have a party while we're waiting!' Instead, he spent the whole time swearing at the audience and probably alienating those who were there to see them.

Ego and arrogance are all very well, and probably necessary to some extent in the music business, but if they get in the way of a good performance they become counter-productive.

Also, gender is irrelevant, anyone can be an asshole.

Kinda depends though - Morrissey played his sub-to-U2 slot exactly the same but he absolutely nailed it.

He did, but he also said a couple of times "I know you're all only here for U2" which fucked me off, because no, we werent there just for U2, we were there for Mozza so shut up feeling sorry for yourself and give us a great set (which he did)

That's pretty much what I mean. He made a couple of comments but otherwise got on with performing, and performing well. With Primal Scream though, we were never given a chance to forget that Bobby was in a strop. They were average musically, and between every song there was abuse. Few things are more likely to put me off than having the singer insulting the audience.

I agree with this. Bobby was well out of order with the crowd! I was so excited to see Primal Scream and he just didn't want to know. Didn't he say something about us all going to hang ourselves?... He had a look about him that suggested he really wanted that to happen! It was the Stones for fooks sake...the band before them were always going to have to find away around a massive (moving into place) crowd of people and Bobby could have smashed the place awake if he wanted to.

And then, to make it even worse, they brought on fucking Haim!

Similarly, Nick Cave knew a fair number were waiting for Mumfords, but he didn't give a toss, he just got on and produced one of the best sets I've ever seen. Scared the shit out of quite a few Mumfords fans too, which was a bonus!

I'm about to word this terribly, but I bet Nick enjoys that kind of environment - completely out of his comfort zone with people who've probably never heard of him. The 'Stagger Lee girl' was one of the most surreal things I've ever seen at Glastonbury - and it was at the Pyramid!!

I too vouch for Primal Scream not being up for it which was a shame, Elvis Costello - Primal Scream - Stones is one of those line-ups which dreams are made of.

I remember Funeral For a Friend supporting Iron Maiden at the SECC a while back, and the fans clearly didn't want them there. They played it superbly though, got some "Maiden" chants going, showed some serious energy and put on a decent performance. Not sure anyone was won over by them, but a lot of folk shut up.

Support acts at big places like arenas tend to be awkward as fuck. People just stand there in silence unless it's some special guest support or something.

I agree. People just stand there watching on like zombies even if there's a few of you there wanting to have a good time.

The only support act I've seen to get a genuinely great crowd reaction was Tek-One supporting Enter Shikari at the Apollo (they even went down brilliantly at Soni whixh was a surprise)

Jack White played my second favourite White Stripes song in Screwdriver and I didn't even know until I got home and someone told me they were so happy for me that I got to see it...

I haven't watched it back so I dunno if he didn't play the full thing or whether it was so bad it was actually impossible to tell what it was, but that's not a very good sign.

He broke into it in the middle of Dead Leaves & the Dirty Ground, so maybe just didn't notice as he didn't do the full thing.
