Beyonce was only a 'turning point' for the minority of Glasto goers who are particularly precious about seeing the kind of music they personally want to hear. I think the widely held consensus is that she did a great job and was a class act. It's less likely that pernickety music fans are going to enjoy Sunday's headline act, but that's entirely their problem. The bookers don't pick crap artists, just acts that have a broader appeal and are therefore looked down on by some.

I enjoy the fact that each night is taking on its own character, and don't begrudge Sunday being more mainstream-friendly at all. There's usually a great alternative, so what's the problem?

Beyonce wasn't a turning point because of the music, pop acts have always played. And she went down great as you said. She was a turning point because she was (I think) the first artist to headline who is more concerned with selling perfume and clothes than making music.

Beyonce sits down with a boardroom full of people before she goes into the studio to do anything. Makes sure her new songs are recorded and released in accordance with her endorsements and products, makes sure all the companies around her are on the same page etc. Shes a businesswoman who sings. A very successful businesswoman at that.

let's not forget when she sang the mcdonalds theme song every night on her mcdonalds sponsored "lovin' it" tour.

Bono was at that shit on the 360 tour. Thanking Blackberry from the stage during the gig. I'd already paid for my fucking ticket. Didn't need to be pitched a phone by the fucking band I'd paid 60 quid to see. Fuck off! Play a fucking song!

If ticketmaster had said "this performance will include live corporate promotions from the band" I wouldn't have went. I'd have watched ads on the telly instead for free.

The thing is with Beyoncé that her type of act is all over the festival. R+B or soul or pop, or whatever, is on plenty of stages and it's understandable that one reaches the top when they reach a certain level. And she's also considered credible and cool by many tastemakers. Whereas I don't entirely know how many boybands have been on the bill but East 17 got a small slot for the sheer novelty didn't they?

Mmmm...I hadn't spotted that G-shaped hole in Take That's tour dates. Worrying.

With a wife & daughter who both like them, I confess to having seen them on their last tour. Spectacular show, but not something which could be recreated on the Pyramid. On the other hand, a few months later, we also saw Gary Barlow on his own, no theatrics, just him and a band, and (I hate to say it) he was really rather good, and funny with it. I can see that working better than a cut-down TT show. But really, I would prefer almost anyone else...

But those dates were decided and announced (?) even before they admitted that Glastonbury were ignoring them. It gives me the impression they either assumed they'd be doing Glasto that day or, more likely, deliberately left it free to try and make it easy to get the booking, or as a way to attempt to strong-arm their way onto the bill. To go to those kind of lengths and then not even get a call back puts a wry smile on my face.
