There are countless country and hip hop acts who are huge there that people outside of America havent really even heard of.

Equally, there are acts that are huge in parts of America that are almost unknown in other parts of the country.

Well look at wireless, this year all three of it's headliners aren't british and one of them is Nicki Minaj, who's never really had massive commercial success here. Just the one or two big singles, her latest album bombed here!

Realistically you'd look at that and think, why is she headlining?

Well because american influence is so great, that someone being ginormous in america has a bleeding over effect.

What's the quote? When america sneezes the world catches a cold?

You could argue the same for Linkin Park. They're headliners at just about all that they play but at Glastonbury up against the Chemical Brothers they'd get a woeful crowd.

that point will become valid when / if Linkin Park are ever being seriously rumoured to headline Glastonbury. until then, it has no relevance at all

I think that the festival audience are a different demographic to the chart record buying public by a long stretch. To use sales of a current pop act as justification for this argument seems immaterial to me, it's about whether an act is a good fit for the crowd who attend, not whether they are currently selling truckloads of singles.

spot on, which was exactly my point last night as to why i don't see Taylor Swift as a Glastonbury headliner.

i just don't think there'll be enough people at Glastonbury that actually want to see her to justify a Pyramid headliner slot.

people are living in dream world if they think she'll have a large crowd at the Pyramid if she headlines. the Foo Fighters will 100% have a much bigger crowd.

she would get a good crowd, sure, anyone headlining the Pyramid would. if she's on the Other Stage on Friday with the Foo Fighters on the Pyramid, they certainly won't have any crowd issues at the Other...

no-one is doubting that she's a massive star in world music. the point is that she certainly isn't as popular amongst the average Glastonbury-goer.

NO!

even if every other musical act in the world got simultaneously vaporised, take that would still be a terrible booking.

nothing, NOTHING, could justify those c**ts playing.

Heh, don't get me wrong. I have the same opinion of their music as you, 100% in agreement. But would they go down well with the crowd? You know it would be a field full of middle aged women singing their hearts out with soggy gussets.

I don't think the world is as segregated as it was a few years ago, with the presence of the internet, spotify, youtube etc the music scene has changed.

If someone is massive in commercial america there's a huge chance they will be huge here too.

It's only in very very rare circumstances that someone will be huge in america and not big in the UK / Europe.

it's not that rare.

3 of the top 10 biggest selling US artists of 2013 are basically nobodies in the UK (Luke Bryan, Florida Georgia Line, Blake Shelton), and 2 others (Garth Brooks and The Robertsons from Duck Dynasty) aren't exactly big sellers here.

Remember reading somewhere that when Garth Brooks finally makes his albums available for download he's likely to become the best selling solo artist of all time.

He's massive in Ireland too, I was in Dublin last year and every single night the lead news story was about some controversy over his gigs there.

I don't see why frothing is a bad thing, the best pop music always make me froth at the mouth with excitement. If not, it's not doing its job properly.

Pop music is about hype, fervour, outlandish statements. Frothing.

#TeamFroth

I've frothed with the best of 'em Hoils. Fair point guv.

Yes. And that her considerable commercial heft offers no entitlement to headline. Nor is it unusual to question this sense of entitlement.

I really like the Taylor Swift album. It's fantastic pop music and is probably in my top 5 albums from the last year, but I don't see her as a headliner.

Beyonce was miles ahead of her in terms of star status, having been a major worldwide star for around 10 years, maybe more, with a huge back catalogue of hits. Taylor Swift has really only becoming the world's biggest pop star off the back of her latest album. I think saying that Taylor Swift is a headliner because Beyonce was, is a bit wide of the mark.

From a UK perspective, except for one or two songs, I don't think TS has really reached a massively wide audience. I'm not buying that because she's mahoosive in America, she can easily headline here. Totally different markets. The crowd still has to be into it, her reputation in America won't carry her through.

I hope she plays, just not as a headliner.

To be fair I don't think anyone would disagree Foo Fighters will get a bigger crowd, it'll take a really big act like Prince as the other headliner to stop them getting the biggest crowd out of the headliners.

I just don't see her playing the Other Stage. Personally I think she's a headliner, though subbing is definitely a possibility, but if she playes it'll definitely be on the Pyramid.

The average Glastonbury goer?

There will be plenty of oiks at the pyramid enjoying TS if she played.. Don't get me wrong, I'd prefer to sit in the dairy field watching the grass grow, but to say 'average Glastonbury goer'

I'm not sure this forum represents the 'average Glastonbury goer' and she has plenty support on here.....
