I have a feeling that in years to come GF will be lots less about the main stage headliners - the Eavii keep dropping hints and there are less 'big' acts aroundand that pool will only ever get smaller.

I can see in 5 years or so headliners being a lot less established than in the past.

I think it will be that the headliners will just be bands who have sold the most records in the previous year.

Maybe. Hopefully. They've definitely said they're doing up the late night areas to make the festival more about that than the headliners. Would love to see the likes of Tame Impala headline Glastonbury. Or Sleaford Mods.

Not really a massive fan of the Biff but thought that if the Foos doesn`t or isn`t happening then they would be an obvious replacement. The more all is quiet, the more I`m guessing The Roses for the Saturday. Foo`s and Florence Friday / Sunday.

Stone Roses are far too quiet at the minute. Something is not right. I know Ian Brown had a day out in court recently but compared to normal there has been nothing from either him or Mani.

If it gets to that point, they should start letting massive headliners headline for the 2nd time. Why limit themselves to first timers if it gets desperate? Maybe 1 massive old name per year, plus 2 newbies.

I dunno, but all the old names will start dying soon. Tthe next ten years or so are going to be tragic.

Nah I don't think it's as bleak as that

New legends and old legends are made as time progresses, reunions are what keep festivals going imo.

We still have radiohead around so all is not lost.

Yep, I can only imagine how fast tickets will sell out in 2045 when it's rumoured dizzee rascal and the vaccines are making a comeback

And that's not bleak?

I was reading about Glastonbury '95 the other day and thought that if Pulp didn't get called in to headline last minute, they could well have just faded into obscurity with most Britpop bands, and realised that the major festivals aren't really doing a large amount with headliners to timestamp eras anymore. Felt kinda sad.

I'm not sure that the old names are going to want to do it again. Keith Richards in particular was explicit about Glastonbury being something to tick off a bucket list, I'd imagine it's similar for a lot of the big names. Sure, Arcade Fire and Kasabian could play again one day, but I can't see the really established acts being motivated by the festival circuit grind, even if they are going to be headlining.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't expect to see U2, Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney,Bruce Springsteen, Metallica or Bowie (yes, I know he has played twice, but at very different points in his career) making the return. Why would they?

Though on the original line-up 2 out of 3 of the headliners (Stone Roses, The Cure) were hardly prime 1995 vintage.

Yeah that's fair enough. I was a bit daft commending a booking that was unplanned.

Still gets on my wick that the big appealing acts are the ones that have been playing for decades and have only gotten around to doing festivals or this particular festival. And relatively fresher headliners like Arcade Fire and Kasabian were sneered at for being weak or something. But I mean they're still booking them acts so I can't complain about the festival's strategy.

The first 3, I agree on. Probably Metallica as well.

I certainly wouldn't rule out Springsteen doing it, 2009 was the first time in 40 odd years that he did proper festival shows, and presumably he enjoyed it as he ended up returning to Pinkpop 3 years later. Can't see why Glastonbury would be any different.

I think the main thing that makes Bowie unlikely isn't that he's done it before - it's that he'll probably never plays a live show again. If somehow the miracle happened and he did decide to go back touring, it'd be at least 15 years since his last appearance at the festival, and an all-conquering Pyramid Stage slot would be a hell of a return.

I love that the Roses are too quiet at the moment. All adds to the mystique they still hold for me, as the only proper gang left in pop music.

They may all hate each other again, they may be writing new stuff, they may be preparing for a Saturday night headline of the Pyramid, they may be doing fuck all. At least people still care about them.

If I had a tenner to throw at the bookies re the Pyramid, I'd go for:

Friday: Foos, Florence

Saturday: Roses, Noel

Sunday, Elton, Swifto

The fact I don't have a tenner is mostly due to constantly losing money on stupid bets.

Has this resurgence in Roses rumours been prompted by some vaguely cryptic tweet/interview/Reni's-cousin's-colleagues-other-half-saying-something or is it just because it seems to fit?

I'd like it to happen myself, but I don't see it somehow. Foos-Roses-Swift would be a good mix, I think (not that it would be my personal first choice of headliners).
