This is something I stick on fairly regularly. Watching them up close, making that sound, just shows they are at the top of their game to me. While some of their output hasn't been to my taste, there is no doubting the sheer talent they possess.

If you don't know Stevie Wonder's stuff, who do you know?

That sounds arsey, I don't mean it to, I am actually intrigued. Probably because for me he is in my top 5 acts ever. When he was announced I couldn't believe it. Hw is someone me and all my mates had grown up hearing all the time.

Well I guess the equivalent for me would be The Cure? My favourite band & a lot of their back catalogue is instantly recognisable to me. Or The Clash. Or QOTSA. Or Arctic Monkeys.

Dunno. There are loads of bands I know in depth who I wouldn't expect other people to. It's not that I don't like Stevie Wonder - I do & I'd love to see him. And it's not the I don't like soul/motown/disco & all that, just I don't know anyone in any depth so although I've heard a lot of the 'classics' or whatever I wouldn't know who sung them.

At no point did I ask for Stones or Arcade Fire on John Peel,

I did not say you did

I think you've missed what I'm trying to say.

Yeah I must have. I thought your generalization was saying the Pyramid is for people who dont like gigs. Whereas I was saying the Pyramid is not about the people who go to it, but its about the acts that play it. They Pyramid is for big acts....................and plenty of gig loving folk will go to the Pyramid to see certain big acts

BTW just as an FYI, as I know you dont venture to it too often, plenty of gigs on the Pyramid have zero spectacle to them. Its just the act, speakers, & screens..............

When I was young I wouldnt have admitted not knowing classic, seminal tunes at all, I would have quietly gone out and borrowed a copy of songs in the key of life from the library and listened to it.

Maybe I was overly pretentious as a teen, in fact scratch the maybe but this surely isnt unheard of.

I was amazed when one of my team members at work admitted to not knowing a single Stones track, it took me ages to get over, I almost made it one of his yearly development goals such was my shock.

Seeing a Pyramid Headliner is a chance to experience something different. At intimate gigs you can stand close enough to see the nosehairs of the bassist of Crispy Ambulance any day of the week.

Twice on Saturdays.

Thats a band I never thought I would see mentioned on here. The only band more famous for their singer standing in for another band than they are for their own music.

The Pyramid can produce brilliant moments. Okay, most of the time it's about lights, lazers etc. and less about performance. But, if you get a seriously good act on there, an excited crowd etc. then it has the potential to be special.

Doesn't help much that my first Sunday headliner was Stevie Wonder, who blew the place away. Such a great party atmosphere too, felt like a fitting end to the (completely!) sunny week. Blur the year before enticed me to go to Glastonbury in the first place too, just looked like such a great place to be.

2015 will be no. 5 for me, and its true you do veer away from the Pyramid a bit (where as when I was a newbie it was a little bit more important) . In fact most of the time I'm glad to be able to go elsewhere and explore. But it's nice to have the odd headline act which causes a little bit of intrigue or anticipation, due to these 'moments'. 2015, if its Coldplay - Swift - FFs headlining, will be the first year where I know all of the bookings are safe and no 'thrills' or shocks will really occur.

At no point did I ask for Stones or Arcade Fire on John Peel, I'm well aware of why big acts need to be on the Pyramid, I think you've missed what I'm trying to say. My point is that the Pyramid experience is not your typical live music experience, Glastonbury is full of people who don't go to see bands the rest of the year, those people turn up for the big spectacle on the Pyramid. Sometimes that spectacle is good (in the case of The Stones and Arcade Fire), but if you're not into the band playing, and you like live music, why get upset about it? The Pyramid is not the be all end all of live music, it's actually a much different beast to what 99% of live shows are, and if that's your thing, you're far more likely to get it on the smaller stages than the Pyramid. The Pyramid is there for people to chant together and wave glowsticks, that's absolutely fine, there's room in the fest for all sorts.

Glastonbury festival as a whole and the pyramid stage is a place for the casual music fan. I don't know why people over complicate it.

just a note to put here ....

There's been mentions of Coldplay as a possibility in plenty of different publications, but as yet I've not seen anywhere stating with confidence that it's Coldplay.

If everything runs as it normally does, over the next few weeks publications everywhere will be talking about Coldplay as one of the headliners as a certainty.

It's normally the case that media everywhere take a statement by efests as on the money.

(so I bloody well hope we are on the money ).

does this count as 'stating with confidence': http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/news/glastonbury-2015-lineup-foo-fighters-and-coldplay-named-favourites-to-headline-10023255.html

The majority of the acts on the Pyramid are, on average, utter tripe the headliners no exception. Yes it's shit that Coldplay are headlining again, but as the massive cliche goes, there's plenty of other things to do on site.

Also I have to say it, Stevie Wonder is a boring God-botherer. Glad we've cleared that up.

I am beginning to tire a little of finding out there is other stuff on at Glastonbury while the headliners on. We know but we're on a long thread talking about headliners in February so we obviously too invested for the headliners to be utter shit. :P

Think the reason I'm always disappointed when a headliner isn't to my taste is because that's the big high profile slot. The biggest likelyhood of them having a massive name so when it's someone not too my taste it is slightly disappointing.
