I think Kanye West sucks, and I'd prefer it if he wasn't there. But am I angry/surprised he's headlining? No way. It's just a reflection of how the whole festival is turning, and the type of people who are going to Glasto now. He'll definitely get a good reception (because the people who don't like him won't go to see him).

There will be an act I like playing somewhere on Saturday night, and i'll go to see them. Sorted.

Are we reading a bit too much into this though? The old all publicity is good publicity thing? I think michael and Emily know the game well enough to not really be that bothered. Outside of these forums the petition and response will be forgotten by most in a week, particularly if we have a line-up announcement.

Yes in the back of Emily's mind she might be wanting to keep Kanye happy but if this has achieved that, persuaded some (like Fuzzy Dunlop above) to go and see him and got others like myself (who can't stand him and will be nowhere near) willing him on to nail it for the good of the festival i don't think it's a bad thing.

The more i think about it, the more fucking shit it is. Were i emily/michael, i'd be tempted to say fuck it, not worth the hassle, and knock the festival on the head. I'm a placid guy, but i'm fucking livid about these small mided solopsistic c**ts like little toddlers throwing a tantrum because everything is not 100% how they want. The eavii bust a gut as a labour of love, getting the best acts they possibly can, and look what happens. Its so fucking depressing

I'll spare that fucker who started the petition a thought, and it's this. If i see him there in June, i'll fucking swing for the twat

This is a superb post. Quite superb. I'm fuming about this whole farce and I don't even have a ticket!

i agree with this. it's much ado about nothing. it's not even the biggest daft petition this week: a one million signature petition was handed into the BBC this week to get them to keep Jeremy fucking Clarkson in his job. it'll be something else next week.

Come on man, the bloke isn't even attending the festival, and I bet the majority of the people who signed the petition aren't. Out of all of the people I have on social media, it's been people who aren't going who are moaning, the ones who are going are all saying the same as the rest of us. Knock the festival on the head over thousands of clueless people who aren't even going?

Yeah, you're right, a lot of those people, the vast majority aren't going, However, can you imagine what it must be like for Emily and Michael though. After all, isn't this the unique thing about the festival, that it's theirs, not some facelss corporate entity. They are intrinisically linked to the event, they are the ones who bear the brunt of all this shit. They're pretty much ordinary people, and they wake up to see 100,000 c**ts visibly moaning at them.

He is attending, but it's his first time.

I don't reckon they've felt pressure from his people, to be honest. The guy is such a monumental dick that they must be used to this reaction, albeit to a lesser extent, on any occasion he appears outside his own gigs. I think it's more likely that she was concerned that he/his team could react to it all and wanted to publicly align herself/the festival with him so he knows she's got his back.

Persoanlly, I reckon they shouldn't have published that, it's all died down already, storm in a teacup, was no reason to give these c**ts any more of the publicity they so desperately crave.

There is both for and againsts I think but I will say, even after it had died down as you say, there was still the need felt to write a fairly lengthy piece to justify it. I'm not being funny but I don't recall many times they've needed to do this, I can't recall Jay Z getting that response as much from Eavis and I believe not Beyonce. I say I believe before someone finds an article to say otherwise. She didn't have a mammoth of signatures against her though, regardless of the intention of the petition, thousands haven't done that for the sake of it, and while many of them are not attending, maybe some people actually are bothered about the festival in general across multiple angles. For myself for example, I don't mind seeing another act I like instead, but the festival is an event I really enjoy and it's kind of my big event away each year provided I get a ticket so after the troubles experienced back in 2008, I'd hate for that to happen again and and risk putting it in jeopardy. Also remember, it wasn't a great year for the weather last year, rain causing people to miss acts etc can be off putting.

I'm not a fan, but I've looked into his stuff this week a lot more than I would. There are a few tunes I do like. I'm waiting to see on the line up, but I'm leaning towards watching him at the moment, I must admit.

(Some potebtial clashes wouldn't allow it though)

I'm finding having to explain what the festival actually is to people who think they know because they've watched a couple of BBC clips increasingly tedious and frustrating - so god knows how the Eavises feel.

It's so repetitive and Groundhog Day-esque - "There are dozens of stages playing at the same time...it's not about the headliners...it's not about that year's particular lineup...the best bits you don't see on tv...blah blah blah"

This year's Kanye West controversy is almost exactly the same as the Jay-Z controversy.

In 2008, Noel Gallagher said Glastonbury was for "guitar music"; this year someone made a petition saying Glastonbury was a "rock festival". In 2008, people were saying Jay-Z was a bad role model; ditto with Kanye this year. In both years, the Eavises brought out the 'The Smiths in 1984' anecdote. In both years people were saying the acts could get bottled or booed off. Both years people were worried they'd drop out. etc.

I thought that brilliant Jay-Z intro video would shut people up but I guess the BBC didn't play it and people forget.

Kanye will probably do a similar video - possibly featuring Jeremy Clarkson - and everyone will proclaim it genius even though it is now a trope (with Metallica having done it last year). The media will call it "the year Kanye West brought hip-hop to Glastonbury".

Then a few years later another rapper will be booked to headline and we'll go through all this again.

And then Muse, the Arctic Monkeys and Fleetwood Mac will headline the year after and people will be placated for a while.

But then there will be consecutive years of rain which will lead to a temporary drop in the festival's popularity leading clueless journalists to speculate that the festival is finished because it is just full of posh people or full of hippies (depending on the newspaper's political leanings).

Eventually, after a few of these cycles - after years of the Sisyphean task of trying to please everyone but still remaining true to the festival's roots - Emily Eavis cracks and cancels the festival.

Then some lonely person for whom the festival was their only joy in life becomes a terrorist and their attacks cause a diplomatic crisis leading to World War Three.

The human race will be permanently wiped by nuclear war, and it'll all be the fault of c**ts like that bloke who started the fucking petition.

This.

This is exactly what is going to happen. It's all so predictable and there's nothing anybody can do to stop it.

From the way I see it Emily had every right to respond to the criticism this time around. Theres been some really quite nasty things specifically aimed at her and her role in booking Kanye. Fully aware that this is a minority within a minority of people genuinely angered by the booking, but to attack her and her father personally in the way I've seen is abhorrent and completely uncalled for. Coupled with the continued media coverage about that pathetic petition gaining X amount of signatures, something from the festival was needed. If only to assert the fact that irrespective of the volume of signatures, it's going to get people absolutely nowhere. Many of us with rationallity and a love for the festival, myself included, will have known this already. Many of the simpletons who actually signed the petition, probably didn't and don't. She addressed it in exactly the right way in appealing to peoples common decency. The bit about how Kanye would feel was indeed cringey, but the message was conscise and neccessary.
